Ludwig wins second straight river race

    Houlton’s Fred Ludwig has won the first two races of the Maine Association of Canoes/Kayak Racing Organization (MaCKRO) 2008 Downriver Point Series Championship, as he finished with one of the fastest times in three years at the 35th annual Passagassawakeag River Race last Saturday in Waldo.     Ludwig logged a time of 40 minutes, 25 seconds for a first-place finish among 74 boats entered into the eight-mile race. His time rivaled that of Kenny Cushman’s 2005 record of 38:05.
    In the Century Division, Peter Blood and partner Mike Sprowl finished third with a time of 46:54.
    The next race in the MaCKRO Downriver Point Series is this weekend with the Souadabscook Sprint in Hampden on Saturday at 9 a.m. and the Souadabscook Down River race at 12 p.m.. On Sunday, the Marsh Stream Sprint in Frankfort will start at 9 a.m., followed by the Marsh Stream Down River at 12 p.m.
    The new highlight of the Downriver Point Series will be the Series Awards presentation at the Meduxnekeag River Race in Houlton on Saturday, May 3. For more information, visit www.mackro.org.
