The month of May starts a busy time for the students at HHS. Softball, baseball, and tennis teams are finally able to start practices and games. Does anyone remember the last time tennis courts had to have the snow blown off them so that practices could be held?
Next week, May 5, is Teacher Appreciation Week. Our goal for the week is to do something special each day for our staff to honor them for their hard work and the dedication that they show to our students.
The eighth grade reading class is studying the Holocaust. They are reading a novel about a girl who risks her life to save her friend, researching on the internet about who was affected by the Holocaust, and viewing a documentary entitled “Paper Clips.” “Paper Clips” documents kids from a school in Tennessee who collect paper clips to represent all who were killed during the Holocaust.

Houlton art students have artwork exhibited at the Blue Moon Gallery in Visions through the month of May. Please drop by to see all the wonderful works of art. History of Film students are presenting their films over the next few weeks during class time. Films featured include Raiders of the Lost Ark, Oliver Twist, Gold Finger, I Am Legend, Help, Star Wars, and Pirates of the Carribean.
Mrs. Richardson’s quilting classes are busy working on quilts for the quilt and art show on Thursday, May 29. Mrs. Richardson has been on sick leave, but the class has had a great response from the Friends and Needles Quilting Guild ladies who are coming in and volunteering their time to help the students. Substitute teacher Brittany Benn, Penny Richardson, and the students would like to thank the following volunteers: Tammy Ritchie, Marilyn Prince, Laurie Little, Sharon Walker, Stephanie Pierce, Freda Fontaine and Kim Hazlett for helping the students with their quilts.
The senior prom will be held on Saturday, May 10. The grand march will be at 8 p.m. this year. This is a change from the usual time of 9 p.m. The prom will be from 8 p.m. until midnight. The senior trip will be the weekend of May 16, 17 and 18. Senior exams start Tuesday, May 27. The Senior Banquet will be held on Monday, June 2, at 5:30 p.m. with Last Chapel following at 7 p.m. Scholarships and special awards will be presented at this time. Graduation is Thursday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Millar Arena.
