To the editor:
Throughout our community, our county, our state and our country, there are children living apart from their families due to many reasons including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and substance abuse. For some of these children, the removal from their home is as traumatic as the abuse itself. Fortunately, there are people in our community, county, state and country who are willing to help these children heal from their trauma by providing a loving and caring home. Foster parents come from all walks of life and for various reasons have decided that helping children is the mission in their lives.
Thank God for foster parents as there are approximately 2,000 children in foster care in the state of Maine and throughout our country there are hundreds of thousands of children in foster care. Foster parents strive to make a difference one child at a time.
May has been designated as Foster Parent Recognition Month, so if you know a foster parent, let them know how much they are appreciated. Let them know the world is a better place because they open their homes and their hearts to children in need. Sometimes it’s the simple gestures that makes someone’s day.
