PIHS girls’ tennis safeguards perfect record

    PRESQUE ISLE – The past week of tennis action has shown the Wildcats already at the top of their game. The Presque Isle girls remain undefeated with a 4-0 record, and the boys’ team posted a 3-1 record after Monday’s victory. Both teams played to a complete victory over Fort Kent 5-0.

    In girls’ singles, Sarah Porter defeated Jessica Caron 8-1, Allison Dean defeated Alli Charette 8-4 and Amy Michaud defeated Alli Charette 8-1.
    In doubles, Wildcats Brittany Bearden and Courtney Hoffses played a perfect set over Bethan Nadeau and Becca Martin 8-0, and Alyssa Farley and Jen Steeves powered over Amelia Stevens and Carnissa Pelletier 8-6.
    At the boys’ courts, Alex Carter won against Adam Bouchard 8-0, Ben Picard defeated Matt Taggart 8-2 and Sam Picard won his match with Kelby Pelletier 8-0. In doubles, Caleb Mathers and Chris Cawley teamed up for the 8-1 win over Alex Charrette and Issac Mitchell, and Kyle Gilson and Bryce Fagin let nothing pass for the 8-0 victory over Robert Deschaine and Alex Boucher.
    Presque Isle tennis took over the Old Town courts last Friday defeating the Coyotes in both the boys’ and girls’ matches. The Wildcat girls posted a straight win over the Coyotes, 5-0. The PIHS boys’ lost only one match for the 4-1 final.
    In girls’ singles, Porter defeated Allison Brown 8-2, Dean defeated Emily Boutin 8-4 and Michaud defeated Gabi DoAmaral 8-0. In doubles, Bearden and Hoffses and Steeves and Madelyn Carson all had victories for PI.
    On the boys’ courts, Carter and S. Picard both had doubles wins for Presque Isle. B. Picard fell in a tight match against Old Town’s Ryan Daniel 9-7. Mathers and Cawley and Gilson and Fagin both posted wins.
    The Vikings and Wildcats met on the courts at Caribou on Wednesday with split results. The Presque Isle girls kept their winning record with a close 3-2 victory while the Caribou boys continued undefeated, 5-0.
    On the girls’ courts, PIHS took two of their singles matches. Wildcat Porter volleyed for the 8-0 win over Laura Collins, and Dean defeated Octavia Panzeri 8-5. Michaud dropped her match to Caribou’s Jenna Selander 8-2.
    Presque Isle’s double duo Steeves and Carson defeated Megan Nadeau and Lydia Kieffer, 8-3. PI’s Bearden and Farley tied Nicole Nadeau and Melissa Nadeau, 8-8, but lost in the tiebreaker.
    Head coach Tim Dolley believed his girls played well under the conditions. “I was happy how we came out and were focused,” commented Dolley. “They didn’t let the cold weather influence their play. My doubles worked well with each other, talking and moving well, and my singles played consistent with limited unforced errors.”
    The Presque Isle boys suffered their first loss of the season to the Vikings. In singles, Carter fell to Franz Zehentner 8-3, B. Picard to Shane Belanger 8-0 and S. Picard to Casey Lancaster 8-0. In doubles, Cawley and Mike Picard and Gilson and Emerson Castro dropped their matches 8-1 and 8-2, respectively.
PIHS girls open at Madawaska
    The Presque Isle girls’ tennis team notched their first win of the 2008 season over Madawaska on April 28, 4-1.
    In singles action, Presque Isle’s Porter defeated Susan Lavertu 8-3, and Michaud volleyed past Megan Hebert, 8-4. Wildcat Dean fell to Nicol Daigle, 8-5.
    Presque Isle’s doubles teams had a complete victory over the Owls. Bearden and Farley took down Cindy Lagasse and Audrey Bergeron 9-8 (7-5), and Steeves and Carson defeated Jamie Nadeau and Jenna Parent 9-8.
