Warriors win two, lose two; Lady Warriors fall
On Saturday, the Southern Aroostook Warriors hosted Fort Kent in a doubleheader in Dyer Brook, with each team taking a win.
NO WHERE TO GO – SACS’ Dakota Sleeper is easily tagged out on his way to third base against Fort Kent last Saturday. The teams split, with SACS winning the opener 3-0 and Fort Kent taking the second game, 6-4.
In the opening contest, the Warriors scored all the runs they would need to win with in the second inning, as they shut out Fort Kent, 3-0.
Tyler Robinson had a pair of singles to knock in two runs, while Dakota Sleeper collected three singles and brought in a run. Dennis Casey also singled twice in the game. The Warriors outhit the visitors, 11-4.
In the second game, Southern Aroostook staked a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the lead was cut in half in the third and then knotted at 2-all in the fourth. Fort Kent took the lead in the fifth, 5-2 before adding another run in the top of the seventh for a 6-3 lead en route to the 6-4 win.
For SACS, Robinson again had a good hitting game with a pair of singles and a double to plate a run. Robbie Toothaker, winning first-game pitcher, blasted a homer and Sleeper chipped in with a run-scoring double.
Last Thursday, the Warriors traveled to Fort Fairfield and picked up a 2-1 win over the Tigers behind Sleeper’s three-hitter and 14 strikeouts.
Sleeper helped his own cause from the plate hitting a run-scoring single. Toothaker singled twice and Cody Robinson doubled for the winners.
The Warriors suffered a 4-0 loss to host Ashland last Tuesday.
Josh Branscombe grounded a leadoff single to open the seventh inning to break up Justin Belanger’s no-hitter. Belanger struck out 14 SACS hitters.
In girls’ action, the Lady Warriors were overpowered 18-3 by host Ashland. The Hornets broke the game open with a 14-run second inning to erase a 2-1 SACS’ lead.
Bre Bubar and Brittany Charette paced Southern Aroostook with run-scoring singles.
GHCA Eagles grounded
Last Friday, the GHCA Eagles fell to host Wisdom, 12-2 in St. Agatha.
The Pioneers held a 9-0 lead until the top of the sixth when GHCA scored twice. Wisdom finished the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Wisdom outhit GHCA 14-2 and the Eagles committed eight errors.
Jaron Gray and Chad Duff led GHCA offensively, both with a single. The Eagles are 1-2.
The GHCA Lady Eagles were downed by Wisdom, 39-10.
The Pioneers collected 24 first-inning runs to bury GHCA. Myrna Barnes doubled and drove in two runs for GHCA, while Hannah Hiscoe singled and brought in a run.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Eagles dropped a doubleheader to Washburn, 32-7 and 18-6.
In the first game, Kiki Smart doubled and singled for GHCA, who fell behind 13-5 in the third.
In the second contest, Smart and Megan Carroll each singled, as Washburn extended its 9-1 opening inning lead with a 12-run second inning.
Katahdin faces Schenck, Hodgdon
In other Friday action, the Katahdin Cougars rolled to a 21-0 triumph over Schenck in East Millinocket.
Andy Kay fired a no-run, four-hitter, while striking out nine and walking one.
Katahdin’s Josh Guiggey had three singles and Kay backed his own cause with two doubles. Cody Cunningham chipped in with a pair of singles for the 4-0 winners.
Last Wednesday, the Cougars shut out visiting Hodgdon, 11-0 behind five different Katahdin hurlers, who combined for a two-hitter.
Billy Duffy keyed Katahdin’s offense with a pair of doubles for two RBIs, while Andrew Hawkins doubled, singled and drove in a run. Kay had a pair of singles.
The Lady Cougars defeated Schenck, 16-7, as well to improve their record to 3-1. But, the Katahdin girls were edged 25-24 by visiting Hodgdon last Wednesday.
Against Schenck, Kayla Stevens led Katahdin with a pair of singles to knock in four runs, while Melissa Duffy had two singles.
In a slugfest, the Lady Hawks erased a third-inning 19-10 deficit by erupting in a 10-run fourth inning to hold on for the win.
Taylor McGary blasted a two-run homer, double and a pair of singles for Hodgdon, while Hayley Quint singled twice and doubled and Dayna Tidd and Whitney Wallace each singled twice for the winners.
For Katahdin, Duffy and Stevens led the way with three singles each, while Jasmine Pelletier had a pair of hits.
Last Saturday, the Lady Hawks fell to host Van Buren, 22-17.
Wallace led Hodgdon with two singles and a triple for three RBIs, while Heather Rockwell chipped in with three singles to bring in two runs.
The Crusaders held a 14-3 lead in the third en route to the victory.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Hawks were overtaken by Fort Fairfield, 25-17. The Tigers used a 10-run first inning to set the tone to the game.
McGary belted a home run and three singles for Hodgdon, while Sam Lycette singled twice and doubled.
The Hodgdon Hawks were routed 16-2 by host Fort Fairfield last Tuesday.
The Tigers knocked in six first-inning runs and held an 8-2 lead over three-and-a-half innings before adding eight more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Ryan Wellington doubled for Hodgdon.
East Grand falls to opponents
Visiting Woodland overpowered East Grand, 14-0, jumping to a 7-0 lead in the second inning. Harvey Brittain singled for 0-2 East Grand.
On the softball diamond, Woodland overtook East Grand, 25-2.
Julia Knights fanned 12 and allowed only six hits for Woodland over five innings.
Nikki Tuck and Liz Gilman led East Grand as each girl had an RBI-single.
