Athlete of the week
    Ashland softball’s Whitney Flint was named small school player of the week in the Thursday, May 8 edition of the Bangor Daily.
    The Hornet pitcher threw a two-hit shutout against Hodgdon, and a no-hitter against Fort Fairfield. PIHS athlete of the week
    The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Alex Carter and Katrina Whittier for being selected as athletes of the week for the week of April 28-May 3.
    Carter had a come-from-behind victory to lead the boys’ tennis team past Old Town 4-1. At a track and field meet at Foxcroft Academy, Whittier placed first in the triple jump and shot put.

    The Portage Hills Country Club will open for the 2008 season on Saturday, May 17. For further information, call the club house at 435-8221.
American Legion Baseball
    Tryouts for the Patriots American Legion baseball team will be held on Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m. at the Presque Isle High School.
    Players must be born on or after Jan. 1, 1989 to be eligible. A birth certificate must be presented.

Canoe/kayak race
    The Presque Isle and Washburn Rotary Clubs are holding the Aroostook River Fun Run Canoe and Kayak 8-Mile Challenge on Saturday, May 31 to benefit the Wintergreen Art Center.
    Race day activities begin with a light breakfast at Thomas Brewer Park in Washburn with the race to follow from the boat launch. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race at 10 a.m.
    The fee is $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and $10 for youth. Prizes will be awarded after the race. For more information or to register, contact Keith Brown at 455-4717 or Mark Putnam at 764-4471.

Bicycle ride for women
    The Bicycle Coalition of Maine will hold the seventh annual Women’s Ride for Heart Health on Sunday, June 1 at the L.L. Bean Casco Conference Center in Freeport.
    The race is held to raise awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Maine women.
    The entry fee is $20 with the race beginning at 9 a.m. Ride lengths include a five, 10 and 25 mile route.
    Free yoga, massage therapy, nutrition education presentations and medical screenings will also be available.

MWSC announcements
    County Physical Therapy is offering yoga classes with Sarah Dominick to limber, tone and strengthen the body.
    Classes are Tuesdays in Presque Isle at 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays in Caribou at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and Thursdays in Madawaska at 5 p.m.
