Law enforcement, others help with fund-raiser

Irving Oil teamed up with law enforcement officers in Maine and New England for its annual Fueling Dreams campaign for Special Olympics. On May 31 and June 1, Irving donated 5 cents for every gallon of gasoline purchased to the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the largest fund-raiser worldwide for Special Olympics.

FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS — April Merritt, left, jokes with customers as they look over baked goods for sale at Irving Big Stop on Saturday. The treats were sold to benefit Special Olympics.
Law enforcement officers designated May 31 as their annual “To Serve and Protect” day. As part of the day’s activities, officers worked with Irving employees and others to pump gas, wash windows and greet customers.
Det. Carolyn Crandall of the Houlton Police Department said law enforcement — including Maine State Police, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department and others — have worked with Irving on the fund-raiser since 1999.

FUELING DREAMS — Kevin Upton of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department fuels up a vehicle Saturday morning while, in the background, Carolyn Crandall of the Houlton Police Department talks about the “Fueling Dreams” fund-raiser with a customer.

“We really appreciate the support from Irving and the officers who participate,” added Crandall.
Over the years that support has helped raise $1.2 million for Special Olympics Maine, she said.
Totals from this past weekend aren’t expected to be available for another week or so.
“The generous support we receive has an enormous impact on not only our athletes, but also their families, friends and communities,” said Phil Geelhoed, executive director of Special Olympics Maine. “Special Olympics Maine is pleased and thankful to have such a caring, community-minded corporate partner in Irving Oil.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is scheduled in Maine for June 3-5.
