Families invited on NHSC hike at Aroostook State Park

PRESQUE ISLE – When considering recreational activities, most families are opting to stay close to home rather than take extended trips. Traditional family hotspots like Acadia National Park and Old Orchard Beach are just too far of a drive for many families.     In an effort to get more people active outdoors and with an eye on gas prices and local resources, the Nordic Heritage Sport Club is planning a family hike at Aroostook State Park on June 15.
Members of the general public are encouraged to join club members at the park for an afternoon of hiking with family flair. Participants can arrive at the park anytime after 1 p.m., hike the 3-mile loop with a group or at their own pace and then join in on a bring-your-own-barbecue in the picnic area, starting at approximately 3:30 p.m. NHSC will provide utensils and condiments.
The Qua Qua Jo trail, which starts in the campground and connects North and South Peaks, is classified as moderate to strenuous, and offers spectacular 360-degree views of central Aroostook.
Hikers should use sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water.
