County residents whose wells or septic systems were damaged as a result of the storms earlier this year may be eligible for federal assistance, according to officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.     Homeowners may be eligible for grant funding to pump septic tanks, perform required repair or replace the system, if needed. Damaged private wells that are the sole source of water may be repaired or decontaminated.
Residents are being urged by FEMA officials to contact the agency to register for assistance at 1-800-621-3362 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Individuals may also register on line at www.fema.gov.
Meanwhile, the federal/state disaster recovery center in Van Buren closed Saturday, FEMA officials said.
To date, more than 400 people visited similar recovery centers in Aroostook and Penobscot counties.
The mobile recovery center is scheduled to be in Portage Lake on June 4 and 5 and in Eagle Lake on June 6 and 7.
The Fort Kent center remains open to help those recover from the flood.
