PITTSBURG, NEW HAMPSHIRE – Mr. Mallet “Andy” A. Anderson, 92, of Pittsburg, New Hampshire, passed away on Thursday morning, June 12, 2008, at his residence after a short period of failing health.
Mr. Anderson was born September 2, 1915, in New Sweden, ME, a son of the late Carlton Anderson and Christina (Swenson) Anderson.
Mallet grew up in Stockholm, ME, and he graduated from Caribou High School in 1932. He learned to play the trumpet at an early age, becoming the first president of the Caribou High School Marching Band. At the end of the Depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) in Patton, ME, and in 1935, he moved with the corps to build the C.C.C. camps in Pittsburg, NH. There he met Dorothy Hawes who became his wife. It was in Pittsburg where his friends began to call him “Andy.”
Mr. Anderson served with honor in the U.S. Navy during World War II, putting his musical skill to work as a bugler. Following his military service, he continued playing the trumpet with local big bands, and he would often be seen playing with Ellsworth Bunnell’s trio all over the North Country.
“Andy” worked many jobs in his life: as a carpenter and logger, a store owner, a forest fire tower lookout on Magalloway Mountain, and as a forest fire patrol officer known in the region as the “wandering warden.” He was an all-around “jack-of-all-trades.” He served for a time as a member and chairman of the Pittsburg school board, and he was a member of the American Legion.
He loved to hunt, fish and guide, and he bowled in the Canaan and Colebrook leagues. He was an avid card player and loved to try his hand at casino slot machines. Andy will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and dear friend to many.
He leaves behind two sons, Michael Anderson and wife, Rhoda, of Littleton, NH, and Donald Anderson and wife, Madeline, of Akron, Ohio; a daughter, Kristina Bishop and husband, Gerry, of Littleton, NH; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Hazel, Inez, Evelyn and Sylvia; the son of his dear friend for many years, Reginald Ellingwood of Lemington, Vt.; as well as numerous dear nieces and nephews.
