The Maine Sports Legends announced their 2008 Northern Region scholarship honorees as Spencer McElwain and Karyn King, two Caribou High School graduates. Eight scholarships are awarded to four boys and four girls in the state of Maine who demonstrate outstanding athletic ability, scholarship, leadership, character and community service. Both McElwain and King will receive $500 scholarships at the start of their second semester in college. McElwain, son of Frank and Joan McElwain, participated in varsity cross country, varsity Nordic skiing, varsity tennis and varsity track and field.
He was elected captain in both cross country and track and field, and received state awards in his athletic career.
McElwain ranked third out of a class of 107 students along with the following honors: Rotary Youth Merit Award, PVC and MIAAA Scholar Athlete Award, National Honor and French Honor Society and All Aroostook Band.
In the community, McElwain is an Eagle Scout, volunteers for the local food pantry, held clinics for young skiers and runners and is a member of Holy Rosary Youth Ministry. McElwain will be attending the University of Maine College of Engineering in the fall.
King, daughter of Gena King, participated in varsity cross country, varsity basketball and varsity track and field. She was elected captain of all her teams. King was the Salutatorian in a class of 107 students along with the following honors: PVC and Big East Scholar Athlete, Basketball’s Maine McDonald’s All Academic Team French Awards, Society of Young Women Engineers Award and 2007 Principal’s Leadership Award. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Jazz and Concert Band, Jazz Choir and French Club.
During her three years on the varsity basketball team, King tallied 247 points, 335 rebounds and 101 steals.
In her senior year she lead the Vikings in rebounds, assists, steals and free throws. King was also second in the Big East with her field goal percentage of 40.8 percent.
In the community, King is a member of the Holy Rosary Youth Ministry, an alter server and the reaccredidation committee for Caribou High School. King will attend Colby College in the fall.
