Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 a.m. The special speaker was Rotarian Venkat Munukutla. He spoke about Why the World Can’t Afford Food. A loaf of bread has gone up 74 percent since 2003. The cost of cereal has gone up 89 percent since May of 2007!
There are many aspects that come into the equation: the way we eat and cook, the price of oil and the use of corn for bio-fuel are just some of the reasons. While the situation may not be averted, knowing the problem can help us prepare for the future. While costs for food and fuel may drop from the current levels, they will never go back to what they were at the beginning of the 21st century.
