Two Caribou residents received minor injuries when the vehicle in which they were riding struck a moose late last Wednesday night on Route 161 in Woodland, according to state police. Jonathan Holabird, 22, and Makayla Gahagan, 20, were in a 1998 Ford pick-up truck, heading south, when a moose entered the roadway from the east side, police said.
The moose was thrown in the northbound lane and was struck seconds later by a 2002 Hyundai, driven by Corey Dickinson, 19, of Stockholm, who was traveling north on Route 161, police said.
Dickinson was not injured, but Gahagan and Holabird were transported to Cary Medical Center for treatment, according to police.
The pickup received about $8,000 in damages, while the car received about $3,000 in damages, according to police.
The moose did not survive.
Assisting in the investigation were the Maine Warden Service, the Caribou Police Department and the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department.
