Claire Y. Thompson of Houlton was one of 521 seniors who graduated from Colby College May 25, receiving a bachelor of arts degree commencement on the lawn of Miller Library in Waterville, Maine.
The commencement speaker, president of Barclays PLC and Colby alumnus Robert E. Diamond Jr., emphasized the importance of competition and willingness to take risks. “Most importantly,” he said, “find that place, find that spot, find that organization that has values that match your values.”
Diamond talked about how the talent pool, once dominated by Americans, is now global and full of graduates from emerging countries who have “jaw-dropping academic qualifications” and the hunger to succeed. He told the new graduates from Colby that they are extremely well prepared. “I know you can compete. I know you can keep up with this more difficult global talent pool,” he said, based on Barclays’ experience hiring Colby graduates.
Colby President William D. Adams handed a diploma to Thompson and each of the graduates.
Thompson is the daughter of Robert Thompson of Houlton and Dawn Matthews of Houlton. She majored in biology, had honors in both Cum laude and dean’s list and went to Houlton High School.
