Easton Field Days
The Easton Field Days events begin tomorrow, July 10, with the annual Golf Tournament at the West Ridge Golf Course followed the next day, July 11, by activities at the elementary school. Later that day from 4 until 6:30 p.m., the Easton Kiwanis will be putting on their annual Chicken Barbeque. Prices for a full meal will be $8, $7 for Senior Citizens and $5 just for chicken.

This will take place on the grounds of the Easton Elementary School. On Saturday, July 12, there will be an early morning breakfast at the Odd Fellows Hall, on Station Road, sponsored by the Easton Extension. Breakfast begins at 6 a.m. and lasts until 9 a.m. Beginning at 4 p.m. that same day, also at the Odd Fellows Hall, the Pattee-Page Post 187 American Legion will be putting on their annual bean-hole bean supper. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the entrance of Perry Circle. The elementary school gym will be open for business after the parade. There will be many activities going on and it should be a fun day for all.
Senior Citizens’ Club
There will be no meetings of the Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club for the month of July.
Visits
Linda Hansen and Cynthia Plourde of Salsbury, Mass., drove home to spend the long 4th of July weekend with their mother and father, Freda and Rollie Dionne.
Althea Simeone, of Thomaston, was home for a couple of days while her mother, Carol Higley, was a surgical patient at The Aroostook Medical Center. Carol is now recuperating at home.
Hillary Trainer, the Easton Rec director, and Sheri Carter and her daughter, Kylee, drove to Bangor last Tuesday to do some shopping and to get Kylee to the Hershey’s Track and Field program the next day. Kylee took part in the softball throw. Although she didn’t win, Kylee had a good time.
Linda and Hughie Turner and their sons were also in Bangor for the Hershey’s Track and Field contests.  Holden did a great job in the 13-14-year-old group, coming in first in both the 100- and 200-meter races and first in the standing long jump. He is now eligible to advance to the North American final competition in Hershey, Pa., later this summer. The Sotomayer boys, Ian and Drew, also did real well in their events.  Over 200 kids participated in this competition and Aroostook County took 22 of the 44 events contested in the afternoon.
Moved
Rena Richardson has left her home on West Ridge Road and moved into the West Ridge Manor, into the apartment vacated by Harold Ireland.
Duncan and Dottie Beaton are in the process of moving into an apartment on Second Street in Presque Isle after the sale of their home and farmland goes through next month. We expect and hope that they do not give up on events and activities in Easton.
Martin to attend Academy
Easton resident Katrina Martin, a student at Easton Jr./Sr. High School, was selected to attend the 2008 Congressional Academy.  The 2008 Congressional Academy runs from June 29 to July 11.
The Congressional Academy for American History and Civics will lead current high school juniors in a careful study of the pivotal turning points in American history memorialized by the “Declaration of Independence,” the “Gettysburg Address” and the “I Have a Dream” speech.
One hundred high school juniors — two students from each state— were selected to participate in the Congressional Academy. The professors conducting the Congressional Academy are among the finest scholars of American history and government.
Participating students will spend two weeks in Washington, D.C., with day trips to Philadelphia and Gettysburg, studying the American Revolution and Founding, the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement. The Academy will thereby expose participants to the ideas and arguments that shaped these three great American epochs, the documents that make up our history and the places where the history was made. During their stay, participants will be surrounded by the streets and halls, the battlefields, public places and private lodgings where the history they are studying took place.
Beginning with three documents, studying in three cities, this Congressional Academy aims to understand three great turning points in American history. Participating students will see how these key events, infused with fundamental ideas, shaped and continue to shape our national identity, our public institutions and our public discourse. Participants in this Academy will join in a conversation across time about the most important issues facing America in 1776, 1863, 1963 and today.
The Congressional Academy is coordinated by the John M. Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs at Ashland University and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
A total of 658 applications were received for the 2008 Congressional Academy. For more information on the Congressional Academy, visit www.CongressionalAcademy.org.
