Homemakers plan summer activities

On May 19, the Spagueville Homemakers’ Extension enjoyed their annual May Outing, by traveling to Smyrna to tour the Amish community. Eleven members and one guest thoroughly enjoyed the tour, and all returned home with baking supplies and treats from the General Store, as well as beautiful flowers from the Green House. Following the tour, the group stopped on the way back to Presque Isle at the Brookside Restaurant for a delicious dinner.     Prior to dinner, President Lois Griffin conducted a short business meeting. LaVone Walters gave her secretary/treasurer’s reports. Marilyn Wheeler said she had not yet heard from the fencing company in Limestone regarding an installation date for the new fence at the balloon site; she said she would contact them. She also informed the group that the portions of the old fence, which had not already fallen down, had been dismantled.
Lois said the Fair Booth Committee had not yet had a meeting; a date of May 28 was set at this time, with the meeting to be held at LaVone’s home. Marilyn brought up the idea of all Aroostook County Homemakers who plan to work at the fair, to possibly purchase matching T-shirts with the Homemakers’ logo. Following a discussion, Lois said she would be in contact with County President Carolyn Kelley regarding this matter. A discussion was held on a possible project for the Homemakers, in conjunction with the annual Balloon Fest to be held in August. Ann Knight suggested serving lemonade and cookies at the balloon site, while showcasing the new fence, further discussion to be held at next meeting.
Marilyn invited the group to the Wheelers’ camp at Squa Pan Lake for the annual picnic, with guests, on June 23. President Lois adjourned the meeting as dinner was being served.
On June 23, eleven members and seven guests enjoyed a delicious potluck picnic at the Wheelers’ camp.
President Lois conducted a short meeting prior to the meal. The Creed was recited, LaVone gave her secretary/treasurer’s reports and volunteer hours were recorded.
Marilyn reported that work had begun for the fence at the at the balloon site. LaVone reported that 50 marigold plants had been ordered from Andrea Smith. A date of Thursday, June 26, was set for planting the flowers. Members volunteering to work were; Lois, Carmen Wiggins, Rose Barnes, Mona Cyr, LaVone, Norma Gudreau and Marilyn Wheeler.
It was decided to serve lemonade and cookies on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 2-4 p.m. at the balloon site, in conjunction with the Balloon Fest. The new fence should be installed by that date, as well as the old shrubs removed and a new donors’ plaque installed. Tammy Wheeler said she had spoken to Rick and Sandy Guerrette regarding the plaque.
Lois recorded dates and work hours for volunteers who will be helping out at the Exhibition Building during Fair Week.
Lois also said that she had talked to County President Carolyn Kelley regarding matching T-shirts to be worn by volunteers during Fair Week. Carolyn stated that not all volunteers were interested in purchasing the shirts; therefore, the idea was cancelled.
Lois then read correspondence from the American Red Cross regarding the blood drive at UMPI. Red Sox gifts will be distributed to donors, plus raffle items will be available. The meeting was then adjourned, and wonderful food and fellowship was enjoyed by all.
The next regular meeting of the Spragueville Extension will be the yearly Planning Meeting, to be held Sept. 22, at Tammy Wheeler’s home.
