Joanne (Jenkins) Wood and husband, Ed, arrived in Island Falls on July 2 to spend a couple of days at their camp on upper Mattawamkeag Lake. While here they kayaked all over the lake one whole day, then ended the day by traveling to Patten for a late lunch and ice cream. They also visited with their aunt, Riva Hawkes, and presented her with an early birthday present. They have now returned home to Wilton, New Hampshire, but will return later in the summer for a longer visit.
Nickie and Carol Varney and two grand children have returned home to Winterport after staying for about 10 days at the Varney cottage on upper Mattawamkeag Lake. During their stay the children had fun swimming and watching the loons, as did the grown-ups. Clayton and Priscilla joined them for for dinner occasionally and also spent the 4th of July with the family before they returned home next day.
Still no signs of any baby deer in my back “forty”. Have a couple of big black crows that appear quite regularly to eat any thing they can find in the grass and in my garden. Spuds are growing well as are tomatoes and carrots. Still have the black cat waiting for breakfast every morning. Glad to see him (or her) as he (or she) keep the pigeons from my bird feeders and probably keep all the field mice away from the house, too. The bird feeders are still in use as the gold finch, wrens and swallows are still around, plus one red-breasted grosbeak who is there just a regular as the others. Now that the rain spell is over will have to get busy and get at the lawn again. Always something to do around here.
