Aroostook Football League
    The Aroostook Football League 2008 season is underway with practices being held at Sincock Field in Caribou for the high school players. The next outdoor practice is Saturday, July 26 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.     There will be a measuring and parents’ questions night on Wednesday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Edmund’s Conference Center of Northern Maine Community College. This is an essential meeting for all players to order their equipment in time for the start of the season.
    This year marks the opening season of Central Aroostook middle school football. The program begins August 30 at NMCC. Registration of players and volunteers is ongoing at this time.

Golf tournament
Officials with TD Banknorth and the Northern Maine Community College Foundation have announced plans to host their third annual golf tournament at the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield on Thursday, August 14.
    Individuals interested in playing in this year’s event or donating an item for the silent auction can contact Aimee Wilkins at the NMCC Foundation office, 760-1188 or awilkins@nmcc.edu.
Biking events
    A Presque Isle time trial (Maine TT #8) will take place on Saturday, July 19 beginning at 1 p.m. on the Parsons Road. The 14-mile road race/ride is part of the Maine Time Trial series. The registration fee is $20 or $15 is preregistered by emailing info@melsmojo.com or calling Melanie at 760-9500.
    The Spudcycle Classic will take place on Sunday, July 20 as part of the Potato Blossom Festival events. Registration opens at the Fort Fairfield Recreation Department at 8:30 a.m. with the kids’ event at 9 a.m. and the adult ride at 10 a.m. The route is 26-miles. For more information call 760-9500.

    As part of Presque Isle’s sesquicentennial celebrations in 2009, The Star Herald will run photographs and stories about the history of sports in the town.      MWSC announcements     
    Several group rides will be held weekly by Mojo’s and the Nordic Heritage Center. Helmets are required. Mondays: women’s no drop road ride for all abilities beginning at 5:30 p.m. from Mojo’s. Mondays: moderate to fast-paced mountain bike ride beginning at 6 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Center. Tuesdays: all abilities no drop mountain bike ride beginning at 6 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Center. Wednesdays: moderate to fast-paced mountain bike ride beginning at 6 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Center. Saturdays: all abilities no drop road ride beginning at 8 a.m. from Mojo’s.
    Weekly spinski group rides will be held in Caribou and Presque Isle. Helmets are required. Tuesdays: moderate to fast-paced beginning at 5:30 p.m. from S.W. Collins in Caribou. Thursdays: moderate to fast-paced beginning at 5:30 p.m. from Mojo’s in Presque Isle.
    Aroostook River paddle nights will be held weekly from Washburn to Presque Isle on Wednesday nights at 5:30 p.m. Paddlers will meet at Perception of Aroostook, 9 Caribou Road, Presque Isle for a two to three hour casual paddle. A kayak shuttle is available for $10, and rentals for $30. For more information, contact Leo Freeman at 764-5506.
