Image     MILLINOCKET AND LOWER WILSON POND- Richard T. Thaxter, 79, died July 26, 2008, following an accident at Lower Wilson Pond. He was born January 9, 1929, in Bangor, son of Robert and Edith (O'Connor) Thaxter.
    He graduated from Bangor High School and from the University of Maine in Orono.  Richard served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired after 30 years from Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket, where he worked as a research engineer. Richard had a lifelong love of sailing, and after retirement traveled to Florida where he received his Captain’s license after attending Chapman School of Sailing.
    He loved the wilderness areas of Maine and was an avid outdoorsman. He was involved in the community, especially with the Girl Scout Program at Camp Natarswi. Richard had a wide variety of interests, each of which he approached with a great degree of mastery.
    He is survived by his wife, Shirley Burke Thaxter of Millinocket and Lower Wilson Pond; a daughter, Janice and her husband, Peter McIntosh of Old Town; four step-children and their spouses, Norma and Gerrard O'Keefe of Limestone, Jack and Kim Burke of KS, Brian Burke of KS, and  Jean and Brad Kreiser of IL; step grandchildren, Keelin and her husband, Michael Kistner, Kevin O’Keefe and his companion Brooke Castile, Cali Burke, Ainsley Burke, BryAnn Burke, Craig Kreiser, and Brett Kreiser.
