Brittany Doak, goalie for the Caribou Lady Vikings, comes up with a save while Houlton’s Abby Kinens tries to avoid contact during Friday’s match at Caribou. The home team won, 3-1.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Caribou boys also defeated Houlton, 3-0.
In the girls’ contest, Jenna Selander was able to connect from just inside the 18-yard line and score the game’s first goal on a cross by Abby Small at the 12-minute mark. Caribou was able to keep the lead going into the second half with a total of 15 shots on goal, while the Shiretowners were limited to nine due to Caribou’s tough defense and goalie Brittany Doak.
With 30 minutes remaining in the second half, Houlton’s Abby Kinens was able to break through Caribou’s defense and tie the game at one. But, only 10 minutes of play had passed before Caribou’s Amanda Cyr put the Vikings back on top when her shot hit the top of the cross bar and bounced inside the line of the goal area.
While lack of offense may have been a factor in the beginning of the game, the Vikings capitalized with a little over 10 minutes left to play in the game, receiving an insurance goal from Small, assisted by Emily Anderson, just inside the penalty area.
Doak finished with 10 saves in the win while Madison Lezotte recorded 12 saves for the Shiretowners, leaving them to a record of 1-4 at the start of the season.
In the late game, the Caribou boys started off their season with a victory. Caribou’s Cameron Anderson scored two of his three goals on penalty kicks as the Vikings defeated Houlton, 3-0.
Caribou’s goalie, Eric Brown, recorded the shutout with a total of five saves on five shots. Houlton’s goalie, Ryan Vanbuskirk, finished with nine saves on 18 shots as the Shires fell to 0-4.
The Viking boys squared off against Presque Isle last night, while the girls take on the ‘Cats tonight at 7 p.m. Caribou’s next home games are Saturday when the team’s host Foxcroft Academy in a doubleheader.
