‘˜Rallying for the Cure’ on Houlton course

Houlton Community Golf Course was in the pink on Saturday, September 13, as it prepared to greet the golfers that would come out to support the fight against breast cancer. Together with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, more than 80 people gathered to raise money and awareness by way of the Rally for the Cure, an 18-hole golf scramble. Pink beads, pink ribbons, pink balloons, and even pink hair and eyelashes could be found as friends and family gathered.
Raising more than $400, this was the most successful year since Gretchen Fitzpatrick and Trisha Fogarty have been chairing the event. Not only did many local businesses support this cause with donations of money and prizes, but many showed up to play, as well.
“Each year we are overwhelmed by the generosity of this community,” said the chairwomen.  “Our proceeds go toward research for breast cancer, but we play in memory of all who have lost the fight against cancer, as well as in honor of those still fighting. So many gains have been made thanks to grassroots efforts like this one.  We are so proud of all who were involved.”
Even though this tournament isn’t about winning, there is always a little friendly competition going on.  This year, two teams shot eight under, and had to go to the tie- breaking seventh hole in order to determine the winners. Leslie Gervais, Lori Holmes, Tim Guy and Gary Hannigan were thrilled to claim the title, and of course, bragging rights for the year. Traci Peabody and Rob Kinens shot closest to the pin on hole number three, and Lou Ann Dwyer and Gabe Goodwin were recognized for their amazing drives on the 18th hole.
When this many Aroostook County people come together, amazing things are bound to happen.  And without a doubt, this event is one of those amazing things.
