The UM-Presque Isle women’s soccer team improved to 6-1-1 on the season after a pair of shutout victories at home over the weekend. Both matches were shutouts, but were extremely different as on Saturday, it took an overtime goal off the foot of Erin Pelletier to defeat UM-Machias, 1-0. Jessica Kinney, a sophomore from Caribou, delivered the assist on the winning play. Billie Martin, also of Caribou, saved four of five shots for the shutout in goal.
On Sunday, UMPI rolled past Fisher College, 11-0. Katie Moody, a junior from Presque Isle, netted a career-high four goals and assisted on another, while Pelletier had three goals. Moody’s first three goals were scored with in a 4:34 span late in the first half.
Amber Bradley, a freshman from Mars Hill, notched a pair of assists and Chelsea Boudreau, Desiree Smith, Makayla Gahagan and Carolynn Tuck were the other goal scorers.
The UMPI men bounced back for a 12-0 triumph over Fisher Sunday after falling to UM-Machias on Saturday, 3-0.
In the win, Corey Fournier and Devon Peaslee each notched hat tricks to lead the charge. Devon Peaslee also had two assists, while brother Josh had a goal and three helpers. Seth Dorr contributed a pair of goals and Tony Hibbard and Brian Zwicker also scored goals for UMPI, which outshot Fisher, 44-2.
Greg Dawson’s two goals helped give the Clippers a shutout win the previous day over the Owls, now 8-3-1 on the season.
UMPI travels to New York this weekend for matches vs. Paul Smith College and SUNY-Canton.
In volleyball over the weekend, UMPI got past host UM-Fort Kent Saturday by winning all three games, 25-11, 25-20 and 25-16. The two teams had also met last Wednesday, with UMPI again sweeping the match, three games to zero.
The cross country teams were in Standish for the St. Joseph’s College Runnin’ Monks Invitational Saturday. Shelley Hanson was 19th for the Lady Owls, circuiting the 5K course in 24:02. Hannah Smith was 21st in 24:29. Julie Rugg took 39th and Kim Grant 41st in 26:57, a big improvement for her. UMPI did not have a full team, therefore did not figure in the team results.
The UMPI men placed fifth with 109 points. Kurt Whisler was 14th in the 8K in 30:45 and Emerson Wright 16th came in at 31:34 to lead the Owls. Caribou natives Brad Burlock and Chris Rines were 23rd and 27th, respectively. Kyle Batchelder was 34th in 36:40 in what coach Chris Smith called a “strong showing.”
Also for UMPI, Michael LeClair was 45th, Chris Hanson 46th in his first race of the season and James Cirell 47th. Cirell’s time of 39:53 made him the only Owl runner to lower his time from the previous meet, and he did so on a much slower course, according to Smith.
The host St. Joe’s took first place in the men’s meet and UM-Farmington was the winner of the women’s competition.
