The UMPI golf team won the Sunrise Conference championship Sunday, earning a berth in an NAIA national qualifying tournament to be held next spring. The Owls totaled 375 strokes to defeat UM-Fort Kent and Vermont Tech, which each came in with scores of 395.
UMPI’s Brett Hooper was the medalist with a 72. He also earned conference rookie of the year honors and headed up the all-conference golf team.
The UM-Presque Isle soccer teams made the trip to upstate New York for weekend matches against Paul Smith College and SUNY-Canton.
The Owl men earned a sweep of the doubleheader, besting Paul Smith College Saturday and SUNY-Canton Sunday.
On Saturday, Josh Peaslee notched a hat trick in a 6-0 win. It took double overtime, but UMPI prevailed over SUNY-Canton the following afternoon, 2-1. Josh Peaslee netted the game-winning goal off a Corey Fournier assist.
The Owls are now 7-2-1 in conference play and 10-4-1 overall.
The UMPI women beat Paul Smith College, 7-2, behind two goals by Erin Pelletier.
On Sunday, the Owl women fell to the undefeated SUNY-Canton squad, 5-0. UMPI is 6-3-1 in the conference and 9-4-2 overall.
The Collegiate State Cross Country Championships took place Saturday, with the UMPI women placing eighth and the UMPI men ninth.
Hannah Smith was 67th in the women’s race and Justin Fereshetian 34th in the men’s event to pace UMPI.
