HOULTON — The Houlton Police Department confirms they have identified some persons of interest in the break-in and robbery of Andy’s IGA, 132 North Street, sometime during the overnight hours between Sunday, Nov. 9 and Monday, Nov. 10. According to the police, the thieves cut their way into the overhead loading dock door with an acetylene torch, went into the store, then cut through the safe door stealing several thousand dollars, cigarettes and the store’s video system. Damages to the store are estimated to be around $15,000 and HPD has eliminated some suspects.

TORCHED — Police removed a nearly 6-inch steel and cement door from the safe at Andy’s IGA for evidence after thieves left behind DNA and footprints which are being processed at the state crime lab.
Det. Carolyn Crandall says DNA and footprints, left behind at the scene, have been sent to the state crime lab for processing and the door to the damaged safe was also removed to the police department. Due to the ongoing investigation, HPD will not release any names of persons of interest in the robbery.
Crandall is working with lead investigator on the case Sgt. Eric Crouse, and says an employee called HPD around 5:30 a.m. saying there had been an apparent burglary at the store. Crandall confirmed that some change and paper money was laying on the floor in what appeared to be a messy “grab and go” robbery.  The torching, she said, left behind an acrid smell that something had been burned.
Store owner/operator, Andy Marino, had no comment on the robbery or the investigation. But, he did say the day-to-day operations of the business continue as usual along with the popular “Bankroll” game that rewards lucky customers with free cash.
