Butch Shaw Award
winners announced

    The Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials recently announced the 2008 winners of the annual “Butch” Shaw Award, presented to the outstanding soccer players in Aroostook County.
    The award is named in the memory of Clyde “Butch” Shaw, an outstanding athlete, coach and official who passed away in 1985.
    The winners are selected by a vote of the Aroostook County soccer coaches.
    In Class B, Presque Isle’s Russ Mortland and Sarah Porter were the recipients.
    Madawaska’s Shawn Parker and Susan Lavertu captured the Class D awards.
    Class D had three award winners for both boys and girls. Brad Trask of Easton, Marshall Davis of Katahdin and Kurtis Daigle of Wisdom were the boys winners, while Courtney Churchill of Fort Fairfield, Melissa Duffy of Katahdin and Brittany Charette of Southern Aroostook were the girls winners.

Senior bowl results

    The 14th annual Maine Soccer Coaches Senior Bowl was played Sunday at Hampden Academy, with the West girls and the East boys picking up victories.
    The West won the girls’ contest, 3-2. Sarah Porter of Presque Isle notched an assist in the loss.
    In the East boys’ 5-3 victory, Warren Zubrick contributed one of the goals and Eric Brown of Caribou shared some of the goalkeeping duties.

Alumni hoop games
scheduled at Caribou HS

    The annual Caribou High School alumni basketball games will take place Nov. 26.
    The girls game begins at 6 p.m. and the boys game at 7:30 p.m. All former Viking players are welcome to attend. The alumni teams will be wearing white tops for the games.

Pre-season basketball
tourney coming soon

    The annual Caribou High School Pre-Season Basketball Tournament will be held Nov. 28 and 29.
    The Caribou girls and boys will take on Carleton North High School on Nov. 28, with the girls game at 6 p.m. and the boys game at 7:30 p.m. Waterville will be the opponent the following day. Game times are 11 a.m. for the girls and 12:30 p.m. for the boys.
    Admission is $4 for adults and $2 students. Call 493-4274 for more information.

Turkey Trot 5K
slated for Nov. 29

    The 23rd annual  Cary Medical Center Turkey Trot 5K Road Race will be held at Caribou High School Nov. 29.
    Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m. The registration fee is $10 and includes a long-sleeved T-shirt to the first 65 to enter. There are awards in three age categories in addition to the overall race winners. The post-race ceremonies include the traditional turkey-topped pizza.

Kayak play time
offered at PI pool

    The Presque Isle Indoor Pool is offering kayak play time beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. This hour of pool time is for those wanting to keep their kayak skills fresh or for those who want to learn more about kayaking.
    The indoor pool’s general swim hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1-2:45 p.m. and Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 7-8:45 p.m.
