I know this is a busy time of the year for everybody but we are hoping you can save an hour or so on Dec. 6 to join the Houlton Humane Society for “Homes for the Holidays.”  This is an adoption event sponsored by IAMS Pet Foods. The event will be held at Hollywood Pet Salon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include an adopt-a-thon, where there will be some beautiful kitties to adopt and photos of more kitties available at the Shelter (we can’t bring them all).
Also, we encourage you to bring Rover or Fluffy with you. Santa will be at Hollywood Pet so you can have your pet’s photo taken with Santa and receive a special treat just for showing up. Santa will know whether your furry friend has been good or bad and this opportunity for a visit with Santa is always fun.
The Hodgdon Community Helpers will be selling Lady Ashburnham pickles and russets at this event – these students made the pickles themselves and are quite the treat. Lady Ashburnham was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick in November of 1858 and grew up in a spacious home. Lady Ashburnham had a sister Lucy, who made wonderfully tasty mustard pickles. These were regularly served as a special treat at the Ashburnham gatherings and also donated for charity functions. Though these were his sister’s pickles, they became known as Lady Ashburnham’s pickles and their fame has traveled far beyond the kitchens of Fredericton. I know you’ll want a jar of these.
Ann Rairdon’s 4-H group has made dog biscuits for us to sell, so those will be available at the event.
There will be a silent auction with some beautiful gift baskets donated by John and Dawn Gibson from Delaware (yes, Delaware!!!).  Wait till you see these, they are chock full of goodies and you will be dying to place a bid on them.  Also in the silent auction will be a gorgeous quilt donated by Roz Morgan and Sue Young, two blanket chests made by my dad (these are unfinished so you can paint them or decorate them however you’d like). There will be other items in the silent auction, too. If you’ve never participated in a silent auction, let me just give you a hint that you will want to be there as close to 2 p.m. as possible to get in the last bid as the auction will close at 2 p.m. so if you see something you really want, it’s just like e-bay, you need to be there and prepared to battle for a last minute chance to write in the highest bid.
We should also have t-shirts, tote bags, mouse pads and sweatshirts available for sale, these are on order now and we hope to have them by the Dec. 6. These are very special items with the original painting of Esther Orr Faulkner transferred onto these items. Esther’s painting of a puppy and kitten is exquisite and I know you’ll want an item of her art for yourself, or as a gift for a friend.
We’ll have a lot of baked goodies available also. And more is needed, so if you have time to cook, please make some bread, brownies, fudge, whatever your specialty and drop them off at Hollywood Pet at 9 a.m.  If you are in the mood to buy, then remember the time is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The most important part of this event is finding good homes for our homeless animals. The rest of the event will help raise money to care for those animals. As you know, we have had some serious financial issues these past few months and we are so very grateful to everybody who has helped us through this.  From the local banks and businesses who have held bake sales, yard sales, bottle drives, etc. to the children who have held penny drives, food drives, and made pickles and dog biscuits, every single one of you holds a special place in our hearts. We hope to see all of you on Dec. 6.
