To the editor:
I was looking for a new career. I went to the Career Center in Houlton and I spoke with Mary Duff. We discussed different career options that I might be interested in.
I gave it great thought and decided on nursing. Mary had me contact Teri Morse; Teri works for the Maine Educational Opportunity Center. Teri suggested that I go and see Bernadette Farrar at the Higher Education Center (H.H.E.C.). I’m awfully glad I did.
Bernadette suggested I take the College Access Program (CAP) that’s offered in Houlton at H.H.E.C. The program is for people that haven’t attended college or are thinking of going back to college and need to improve their academic skills. The CAP staff will test you before you start the program to see where you are academically. Then the staff will go over the test results and suggest what courses you’ll need to take.
The CAP staff provides a seminar that covers career exploration, filling out applications and financial aid forms, where to access grants and many other topics that college students need to know.
The CAP staff is a wonderful group to work with. I just wanted to share this because of how it’s helped me academically, and to reach my career goal. Also, I wasn’t sure how many people are aware of the College Access Program. I want to encourage people that are thinking about a new career or just want to improve their academics to contact H.H.E.C.
