CARIBOU — Though Thanksgiving traditions may vary, there are usually a few constants in every variation of Thanksgiving, one of which is, of course, the turkey.     Dana Corbin has been a store manager at the Caribou Shop’N Save for 32 years. He estimates that about 10,000 pounds of turkey are purchased for Thanksgiving.
“The average person will usually get a 12 – 15 pound turkey, but turkeys can be as much as 20 pounds. We have smaller turkeys, but those are hard to come by around the last week before Thanksgiving,” Corbin said. “Marval is probably our most popular brand of turkey, but cost is probably the determining factor on that one because it’s the lowest price,” he added.
The second best seller at Thanksgiving is a close tie.
“It’s probably going to be between stuffing mix and cranberry sauce,” said Corbin. “Bells is probably the most popular stuffing mix we sell. I think it has to do with the fact that it’s been around for a long time and a lot folks parents probably made that kind.”
As expected, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving usually means large crowds at the supermarket. “Wednesday is our busy day because we get a lot of customers that need one or two small items,” Corbin said, “plus some people wait until the day before to pick up their produce and their pies.”
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving usually ushers a couple thousand people through the Shop’N Save doors, but Corbin is prepared. He assured any potential customers, “We’ll have more employees working on Wednesday to combat the rush.”
