Senior captain Erica Davis (North Yarmouth) posted a double-double with a team-high 23 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore captain Megan Korhonen (Littleton) added 19 points, eight assists, and four steals to help the University of Maine at Presque Isle (2-3) defeat the College of St. Joseph (1-4) by a 89-57 score in the consolation game of the Merry Monk Classic Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Michelle Thompson paced the Fighting Saints with 23 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort. UMPI jumped out to a quick lead and established a 37-13 halftime advantage. The Owls outworked the Fighting Saints on the glass, out-rebounding their opponent 48-27. The Owls also dished out a season high of 28 assists and outshot the Eagles 53.6 percent to 33.9 percent in the win. Freshman Emily Moore (Lisbon) led the Owls’ pilfering effort of 25 steals with five grabs; she also dished out six assists on the day. Junior captain Mindy Sullivan (Lisbon) added a career high of 13 points in 18 minutes of action, shooting 6-8 from the floor and 1-2 from the free-throw line. Freshman Whitney Flint (Ashland) added 10 points and six boards in the win.
On Friday night, the Eagles of Green Mountain College established a 33-12 lead at the break and went on to defeat the Lady Owls, 80-44, in the nightcap contest to advance to the tourney title game against Saint Joseph’s College. GMC used a balanced scoring attack and a 50.8 percent (32-63) shooting effort from the floor to topple the Owls, who shot just 21.9 percent (16-73). The Eagles also dished out 27 assists on the night.
The Owls were led by Megan Korhonen, who had 13 points, while Whitney Flint added 12 points and Mindy Sullivan registered 13 rebounds. For the Eagles, Natalie Clark and Molly Hopper both netted 14 points to lead all scorers and Christina Chamberlain notched a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points.
UMPI point guard Megan Korhonen was selected to the Merry Monk All-Tournament team for her phenomenal two day effort.
The Lady Owls are back in action on Friday, December 12 as they look to host the Eagles of Husson University. Game time is 7:00 pm
The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team battled to a 123-77 loss to host Husson University at the Paul Bunyan Tournament on Friday night at Newman Gymnasium; ball movement, tempo, rebounding and defense were the key ingredients for victory as the Eagles jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looking back.
Junior Ray Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio) led the 0-4 Owls with 37 points and eight rebounds despite being plagued with foul-trouble in the first half and facing a constant double-teaming in the second. Sophomore point guard Devon Peaslee (Woolwich), and freshman forward Ben Rosser (Caribou) each tallied 13 points in the loss.
The Eagles shot 59.8 percent from the floor for the game while taking 82 shots and committed just 12 turnovers to UMPI’s 26. Husson also gained a16-9 advantage on the offensive boards and a 38-29 rebounding edge overall.
Husson’s Blaine Meehan scored six of the first eight points in the game, but it was a balanced scoring attack that fueled the Eagles point explosion. Meehan was one of five double-digit scorers with 15. Former University of Maine walk-on and Hampden Academy grad Jay Uhrin led the way with 18 points and eight assists while Matt McKenzie of Warren finished with 17 points and six rebounds.
The Owls surged for a comeback early in the second half, but had their hopes deflated as Husson put on a 12-3 run that gave the Eagles a 74-44 lead with about 12 minutes left in regulation to secure the win.
In the consolation game of the two-day tournament, played on Saturday afternoon, Ray Mitchell posted 26 points and six rebounds as the UMPI Owls dropped a tough decision to conference rival University of Maine-Fort Kent 128-72. Bengal teammates Hamill Bassue and Jimmy Lopez scored 20 and 19 points, respectively, to lead their UMFK team and go over the 1,000-point mark for their careers. Bassue and Lopez were two of seven players to score 11 or more for the 2-5 Bengals, who shot 60 percent from the floor.
Sophomore shooting guard Ronald Spencer (Chicago, Ill.) had 21 points, while Ben Rosser, who continues to play well as a first-year athlete, added six points and six rebounds in the Owl loss.
Once again, Ray Mitchell was select to the Paul Bunyan all-tournament team for his two-day offensive domination.
With both losses, the Owls fall to 0-5 on the season as they look to host the annual Star City Tournament this upcoming weekend in Wieden Gymnasium. UMPI is back in action on Saturday, December 13 as they look to take on Unity College at 2 pm. The Owls hit the hardwood again on Sunday, December 14th against Maine Martime Academy; game time is at 1 pm.
The UMPI men battled to a 126-50 loss on Thursday evening to the Black Bears of UM-Orono at the Alfond Arena. With the loss, The Owls were led by sophomore Ronald Spencer (Chicago, Ill.), who had 20 points on the night. Freshman Ben Rosser (Caribou) had an impressive showing, as he added 14 points and four blocks to help his team in the loss.
Maine was led by Troy Barnies who had 16 points and a career-high 20 rebounds.
Maine took a 69-24 lead into halftime and continued their scoring attack as they went on an 11-2 run to start the second half.
Maine went 52-for-103 from the field while UMPI went 17-for-64.
