100 Years Ago-Jan. 20, 1909
 Aroostook Times

    Letter B Road —We had a fine snowstorm Sunday, which improved the roads greatly.
    Smyrna Mills — The Carr House took fire and burned down Saturday noon. A defective chimney is supposed to be the cause of the fire.
    Monticello — Lee C. Good has purchased a new piano from the well-known firm of Nelson Bros., Houlton, Maine.
    A guest — Miss Maria Louise Hacker of Fort Fairfield, was the guest of Miss Emma Putnam.
    Congratulations — Charles P. Barnes was on Monday appointed assistant Attorney General by Atty. General Philbrook, and Charles’ many friends in Houlton extend congratulations to him on his appointment.

    Houlton — Mrs. J.S. Robinson entertained a number of young people at an enjoyable party Monday afternoon at her home on Watson Ave. The occasion being the 9th birthday anniversary of her daughter, Janice.
    Music Store — Miss Virginia Downie is assisting for a time at Haley’s Music Store.
    Birth — Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bickford are receiving congratulations on the birth of a son, Tuesday, Jan. 16 at the Aroostook Hospital.

50 Years Ago-Jan. 15, 1959

    Appointed — Harold L. Stewart attorney, has been appointed as assistant county attorney. A graduate of Houlton High School, Mr. Stewart attended Ricker Junior College, University of Maine and Georgetown University.
    Ricker — Candidates have been announced for the King and Queen of the Masquerade Mardis Gras Ball. The seniors are Ann Lovely, and Bernard Walton; juniors, Sylvia Lake and Thomas Good; sophomore, Dorothy Hand and David Inman; freshmen, Susan Rick and Edward Henderson.
    Colby — A Houlton native, Miss Sigrid Tompkins was one of three alumni participating in an All-College Assembly at Colby College. A member of the Portland law firm of Hutchinson, Pierce, Atwood, and Allen, Miss Tompkins graduated from Houlton High School in 1934 and from Colby in 1938.
    Shrine — Mr. Herschel McIntosh of Houlton was appointed orator of the Anah Temple in Bangor by Potentate George F. Peabody. Mr. McIntosh was first named to the post by Percy Campbell of Houlton, past potentate of the Shrine.

    HRH — The hospital has added state-of-the-art monitoring. The Datamedix computerized monitoring and telemetry system has been installed in the seven-bed special care unit at the cost of $85,000.
    Sunshine Club — The Sunshine Club of New Limerick is celebrating its 60th year of continuous service to the community.
    Island Falls — Rep. and Mrs. Carl B. Smith had all their children home for the Christmas holiday, the first time since 1975 when all have been together. Present were: Durand, Pamela, Barry, Carl II and Sonja.
    Lady Shires — The Houlton girls are 10-0 on the current basketball season and have just three home games remaining. They will be seeking an unprecedented third straight Eastern Maine Championship in Class B.
    All-Aroostook — Selected from Southern Aroostook Community High School to participate in the All-Aroostook Music Festival are, Mark Bouchie, Stephanie Perrin, James Ackerson, B.J. Hallett and Debbie Ireland.
    Completes training — Marine Pvt. Matthew Quint, son of Wayne and Lorraine Quint has completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
