Goldie M. Johnson, age 88, passed away Friday, March 6, 2009, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Lakeland, Florida after a bout with cancer. She was born on March 23, 1920 in Cherryfield, Maine as the first born and only girl to Blanche Eleanor (Dorr – daughter of Eliza Tenan and Melvin Dorr) and Maurice Stanley Morse (son of Roxie Connors and Edmund Owen Morse).
Goldie attended school in Cherryfield, Maine and graduated from the Cherryfield Academy in 1936 at the age of 16 as valedictorian of her class. She then attended the Maine School of Commerce (now Husson College) in Bangor, Maine. She became an employee of the American Peat Company where she set up their bookkeeping system and managed their office. This is where she met Frederick Adolph Johnson (born February 5, 1919 in New Sweden, Maine) who had been hired in the capacity of an interpreter for the Swedish millwright installation supervisor who could not speak English.
Goldie and Frederick were married on February 15, 1939 and lived in Cherryfield with her parents until the birth of their son Lance Herman on August 10, 1939. After that, they moved to New Sweden and shortly after moved into an apartment in Caribou, Maine. She took a part-time job with the L. D. Bearce oil company until the birth of their daughter Lucinda Marice on January 21, 1942 (now deceased). She then took a job at the Caribou Production Credit and Federal Land Bank offices in Caribou which she held for 10 years. Subsequently she took a position as comptroller of the Beaver Brook Farms group of companies which she held until June 1, 1984.
Goldie was active in the community and a member and past president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the H. P. Pratt, Jr. #15 Post of the American Legion. Goldie and Frederick were active members of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden, Maine.
After about six years of being a so-called snowbirds, Goldie and Frederick bought a home in the Schalamar Creek Golf Club Community in Lakeland, Florida in 1990 and Lakeland became their adopted community.
Goldie was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Gerald and Galen; and her husband and daughter, Lucinda Hebert. She is survived by her son, Lance H. and his wife, Lillian, of Portland, Or, a son-in-law, Athill Hebert of Caribou, seven grandchildren, Lori Weber and husband Mark, Lance Jarl Johnson and wife Michele, Erin Wernli, all of Portland, Oregon; Miles Hebert and wife Lisa of Gahanna, Ohio, Logan Hebert of Doynton Beach, Florida, Seth Hebert and wife, Angie, of Bangor, Maine, and Dr. Hannah Yamin and husband Jay of Worcester, Ma.; six great-grandchildren Cassie Weber, Dilan and Ayden Hebert, and Weston, Camden and Mackenzie Hebert.
