Sen. Jackson’s legislation would expand Maine’s moose hunting season

Augusta — Senator Troy D. Jackson (D-Aroostook) of Allagash has submitted legislation to expand the moose hunting season in Maine. An Act to Expand the Moose Hunting Season, LD 929, would add a week to the current two week hunt, and increase permits for the Aroostook County zones.     “The moose population in the County is much higher than the rest of the state. They are a true hazard to motorists,” said Sen. Jackson. “By adding one more week and increasing the number of permits, we will allow for greater control of the population. It’s not a fix to the problem, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
The bill has received bi-partisan support. Rep. John Martin of Eagle Lake is the bill’s lead co-sponsor, and he is joined by Reps. Ken Theriault from Madawaska, Peter Edgecomb of Caribou and Richard Cleary, Houlton.
“This bill is great for the County on so many levels,” said Rep. John Martin. “Not only will it help keep our roads a bit safer, but an extra week and extra permits will undoubtedly result in increased revenue in the area – more hunters, more guides, etc. It will have a significant impact.”
LD 929 will be refered to the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.  It has not been scheduled for a public hearing at this time.
