Lady Shires pull out win; Shires drop to Howlers

The game between Houlton and PVHS was tied three times before the Lady Shires pulled out the 9-8 win in extra innings.
The Howlers tied the game at 5-all in the third, but the Lady Shires scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. After two Howler errors in the eighth, Courtney Putnam’s sacrifice brought in the winning run.
Nikki Eastman and Taylor Bailey each singled twice for Houlton.
In the boy’s contest, the Shiretowners led early in the game, 4-0 before the game started to unravel.
The Howlers defeated Houlton, 12-5 win.
“Defensively, we weren't able to finish the inning  off with two outs,” said Houlton coach Shawn Graham. “They scored nine of their runs with two down. I also thought their hitters were very disciplined, as they made Porter (Gervais) throw far too any pitches than we'd like.
“Offensively, we needed to do a better job of putting the ball in play. We had 11 strikeouts, which is far too many to win ball games. We just need to remain patient and hopefully we'll get things together,” added Graham.
Levi Prosser led Houlton with four singles to drive in three runs, while Ian Gervais went 4-for-4 from the plate with four singles to also bring in three runs.

Katahdin teams win opener
