Special to the Star-Herald

In July, when the weather is heating up, the Forum has an option for staying cool—hockey! For two weeks in the summer, children of all ages can participate in a camp geared toward teaching the fundamentals of skating, stick handling, passing, as well as team puck control and possession. The camp will include both on-ice and off-ice training.

Sponsored by Aroostook Amateur Hockey, the camp is scheduled for Monday, July 6 to Friday, July 10, and Monday, July 13 to Friday, July 17. Children can sign up for one or both weeks. Sessions will be broken into three age groups. There is also a session that meets only on Tuesday and Thursday designed for children who have never played before.
Darren Carlisle, former stand-out high school hockey player, member of the 100-point club, and Bantam head coach, will be leading the camp. He will be assisted by former stand-out high school hockey players Greg Cyr, Ethan Hill (Goalie), and Douglas Carlisle (current IP Head Coach), and Dr. Carl Flynn, Head Hockey Coach of Presque Isle High School.
The cost of the camp is $150.00 for one week or $180.00 for both weeks. Families can save by pre-registering by June 20 -$10 off one week and $20 off two weeks. The cost of the two-day session for children who have never played before is $25.00. A girls camp will be added if enough interest is expressed. Pre-registration is not required, but encouraged. Payment is due at registration on July 6th.
No player will be allowed on the ice without the completed “Waiver of Liability.” Participants of Aroostook Amateur Hockey 2008-2009 season have completed the required form. Those who haven’t, can do so easily.
For a registration form or for more information, contact Douglas Carlisle at 768-0523. The registration form can also be found on the association’s web site: www.ouraaha.com.

THE 2008-2009 Pee Wee hockey team, sponsored by the Turner Foundation, was composed of 13 players with a good mix of first and second year players. Everyone progressed well in their individual technical skills and performance levels, despite a small team. During the season, the team maintained a solid league record. In their final tournament in Casco Bay, the Pee Wee team beat every other team, only to lose in the last 40 seconds of the final.
Pee Wee is one of the most difficult levels to transition to because of the full contact aspect of the game. The whole year was centered around team spirit and supported by a skilled team of coaches J.P. Michaud and assistants Pierre Patenaude and Carl Flynn. “It was really an honor to be associated with such a group of highly motivated and skilled players,” said Coach Michaud.

THE BANTAM TEAM, sponsored by the Presque Isle Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, had a new coach this year – Darren Carlisle. A stand out high-school hockey player and member of the 100-point club, Carlisle pushed the team in skating drills and the desire to win. With small numbers, the team had very tough competition in New Brunswick, playing against teams sometimes twice their size. Even though they remained winless in the regular season, the team ended on a high note at the Friendship Tournament in Bangor. The Bantams walked away with five straight wins and the championship banner.

SUCCESS is the only word that can describe the Presque Isle girls hockey season. The combination of new players and seasoned veterans lead to team with new vitality and a very positive attitude. All player skill levels were raised as the new recruits were tutored by more experienced players during skating, shooting and puck handling drills. Perhaps this attitude of helping each other made this team the success it was.  Victories against the County foe, Houlton, were achieved this year as well as a second place finish in the Mid-Coast Classic Girls Hockey Tournament in Campden. Looking forward, the future is bright for the girls program. Girls of any age from all central and northern Aroostook County towns are eligible and encouraged to play.

RUTH HARE, pictured left, is the proud owner of a new 42” LG Plasma TV. Ruth purchased a ticket from her grandsons in a raffle supporting Presque Isle Youth Hockey.
Ron LeVasseur of LeVasseur’s NAPA Auto & Truck Parts donated the TV to the organization to help raise funds for ice time and equipment. A current member of the Gentleman’s League, Ron grew up playing youth hockey in the Bangor area. His 5-year old son, Cameron, is currently on the Presque Isle IP team, of which Ron is an assistant coach.
The organization raised over $1500 with the TV raffle. Pictured are Hare and LeVasseur in front of Ruth’s new TV!
