100 Years Ago-May 12, 1909
 Aroostook Times

    Letter B Road — James A. Fitzpatrick and son have commenced to saw long lumber in their mill.
    Crystal — Miss Della Rowe who is taking a course of shorthand and bookkeeping at the Patten Academy visited the Patten Grange recently.
    Drew’s Mills — Mr. Rider is around again this spring with his drilling machine and the following people are having wells dug: Chas. Fowler, Dan Burton, Jess Oliver and H.A. Lovely.
    Stable — John B. Madigan is building a modern stable on the lot in rear of his residence recently purchased from the Powers’ estate.

SNAPPY SHOES — This was the style of shoes in 1909 and sold at Merritt’s Shoe Store located in the Millar Block on Court Street where Hairworks’ Studio is today.


75 Years Ago-May 10, 1934

 Houlton Pioneer Times

    Admitted to Bar — Mrs. Doris Shaw Heffner of Los Angeles, Calif. was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. She was born in Houlton the daughter of Ransford Shaw, former Maine Attorney General. Both her father and brother Herschel practice law in Houlton.
    Be self-supporting — A well-planned garden will do much to reduce the family food bill.
    County winner — Helen Hughes, daughter of Elias Hughes and a junior at Houlton High School, has won the Spear Speaking Contest for the second year in a row. She will compete in Augusta. Dana Drew of Patten Academy and Noreen McFarland of Merrill High School were chosen as alternates.
    Clean-up Day — The Board of Selectmen have chosen May 17, 18 and 19 as annual clean-up days in Houlton. Town trucks will cover every street to pick up refuse and rubbish to be carried to the town dump at no charge.


50 Years Ago-May 7, 1959

    May Days — The Houlton Retail Trade Board has signed up 69 merchants for May Days Promotion set for May 15, 16 and 18.
    Varney family — The firm of Walter C. Varney and Sons, on upper Military Street constructed a camping trailer. The tent is 13 feet, 8 inches wide and 8 feet long, ready for hauling. This is the answer to a sportsman’s camping needs. Varney, his sons and with help from his wife constructed the collapsible camping trailer that will sleep four comfortably and six if necessary. Price of the trailer is $700.
    Good catch — Donald Folsom, 17, of Houlton caught a 22-inch, 4-pound, 8-ounce brown trout in B Stream. He was fishing with worms and after hooking the trout, the line broke, but he reached down and grabbed the fish before it got away.

    East Grand — Honor parts for East Grand High School have been announced for the Class of 1984.  Earning top academic honors in their class are: Valedictorian, Susan Kinney; Salutatorian, Lisa McEwen; First Honor essayist, Willard Hannington,Jr; and Second Honor Essayist, Karen Worster.
    Queen candidates — Vying for the title of Houlton High Circus Queen are: Crystal Cunliffe, a senior; Shelby Penprase, a junior; Lisa Callnan, a sophomore; and Maria Beaulieu, a freshman.
    Community Chorus — The Houlton Community Chorus presented their spring concert at the Houlton High School Auditorium. Jonathan B. Smith of Island Falls was the director and Pat Flemington the pianist.
    Scott honored — Mark Paul Scott, son of Paul and Donna Scott of Linneus received several awards during the annual awards convocation and graduating class banquet at the University of Maine at Ft. Kent. Mark was one of three seniors to receive awards for Academic Excellence, for having been on the Dean’s List for seven consecutive semesters.
    Break dancing — Break dancing is sweeping the country and area residents can have the experience of seeing a live performance at Houlton High School Auditorium. “The Crisp Crew” of Bermuda is coming to Houlton via Fryeburg Academy and will entertain with their art, a combination of mime, jazz dance and acrobatics.
