HOULTON — Young people wearing their Salvation Army uniforms may be seen in the area next week as part of the celebration marking National Salvation Army Week, May 11—17. Captain Irma Pearl says Salvation Army youth will be prepared to discuss the organization’s work as they go to school and public places.
National Salvation Army Week was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 as a time to honor the organization’s work on behalf of the poor. The Salvation Army was established in London, England in 1865 as an evangelical part of the universal Christian church and has been active in the United States for the last 129 years.
Its social services for those in need include providing food, shelter, disaster relief, assistance to the disabled and outreach to ill and elderly people. The organization says it supports its services with about 83 cents of every dollar it raises.
