To the editor:
Last week the Maine Legislature passed a very controversial piece of legislation. Public Law Chapter 82, LD 1020 redefines marriage, that has for centuries, been defined as a union between a man and a woman to a union of two people.
If allowed to stand, this new law would allow the legal marriage of two people of the same sex in Maine and recognize such unions in other jurisdictions.     Voters in Aroostook County may be interested in knowing how the legislators from the County voted on this issue.
As this bill made its way thru the process there were four roll calls in the Senate (Roll Calls No. 52, 53, 54 and 64) and four Roll Call Calls in the House ( Rolls Calls No. 48, 49, 50 and 52. Only two Aroostook County legislators voted in favor of same sex marriage. Rep. Richard Cleary of Houlton and Rep. Pat Sutherland of Chapman both voted in favor of the bill.
All of the others, Reps. Ayotte of Caswell, Clark of Easton, Martin of Eagle Lake, Edgecomb of Caribou, Joy of Crystal, Theriault of Madawaska, Willette of Presque Isle and Senators, Sherman of Hodgdon and Jackson of Allagash voted against the bill.
