United Methodist Women
The May meeting of the Mars Hill UMW met in the church vestry on May 11 at noon with nine members present. After the table blessing, the members enjoyed their sandwiches. Chips, drinks and desserts were provided by the hostess and co-hostess Elaine Bailey and Donna Brewer.
After an hour of socializing, the meeting was called to order by President Elaine Bailey. She led in the UMW Purpose Pledge and Prayer. One of the “highlights” of the meeting was hearing each member tell of a special act of kindness that happened since the last meeting.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted as read. A thank-you note was received from Heidi Shaw, who spoke on Meals-on-Wheels at the last meeting. She appreciated the group’s donation and support for this worthy local project.
The annual Trash and Treasure Sale will be held in the church vestry on June 27. The setups will be on June 26. Elaine Bailey has volunteered to be chairperson.
Many upcoming UMW activities were discussed and plans and dates were decided. There will be no UMW meetings in June, July or August. Members voted to enjoy a luncheon “out” on the June meeting date.
Janice Footer and Cindy Anderson will be in charge of the September meeting. The Presque Isle UMW extended an invitation to a social evening at their church on May 26 at 6 p.m.
President Elaine reported on the recent all-day UMW District Meeting in Limestone. It was a very successful day and well-attended. After the benediction, Elaine Bailey presented the program, a film on early days of Maine lumbering with the woodsmen and river drivers.
Those attending included: Elaine Bailey, Donna Brewer, Janice Footer, Frances Banks, Ruth Sylvester, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone and Clara Hussey.
Dedication planned
On Sunday, June 7, in conjunction with Youth Appreciation Sunday (ages infant through college), East Ridge Union Church will be dedicating the new stained glass window in memory of former pastor Steve Perry during the morning service at 10 a.m. The window was made possible, in part, thanks to a generous donation from Lois Ladner, Steve’s aunt, to the memorial fund. Pastor Perry passed away in September 2002. All are invited to attend.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, May 12, at 6:30 a.m. The gardeners in the club have been challenged to donate part of their crops to the local food pantry.
The special speaker was Connie Bondeson, an environmental planner who has been working with the Mars Hill Recycling Committee.
A brochure is being done to educate the public about how many things can be recycled. The goal is to reach 50 percent by improving the collection efforts and working toward more organic recovery and composting.
