Tennis players compete in singles tourney

    The Eastern Maine Class B Region 1 Tennis Singles Tournament was held at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday.
    In the boys’ second round, Houlton’s Ashir Abouleish defeated Yide Yan of Washington Academy, 8-2, while Van Buren’s David Levasseur topped Houlton’s Derek Thomas, 8-6.
    In the qualifying round, Caribou’s Taylor Jepson defeated Abouleish 6-0, 6-2.
    On the girls’ side in the first round, Houlton’s Anna Caron was defeated by Washington Academy’s Lara Belmont, 8-6, while Houlton’s Holly Bouvier was bested by Fort Kent’s Rebecca Martin, 8-2.
    In regular season action in Presque Isle, the Wildcat girls shut out Houlton, 5-0, 5-0.
    In the first match, Presque Isle’s Sarah Porter defeated Hiba Bilal, 8-0; Brittany Bearden of Presque Isle defeated Caron, 8-0, and the Wildcats’ Kailee Ireland defeated Bouvier 8-0.

    In doubles: Jen Steeves-Madelyn Carson topped Houlton’s Kelsey Fitzpatrick-Daisy Torres 8-0 and the Lady Wildcat pair of Dani Wooland-Elise Jones defeated Ashley Hannigan-Meagan Gerath, 8-1.
    In the second match, Bilal, Caron and Bouvier all were defeated by 8-0 scores. In doubles action, Fitzpatrick-Torres fell 8-0, while Hannigan-Gerath were bested, 8-2.
    The Lady Wildcats improved to 7-2, while Houlton dropped to 0-9.
    On the boys’ side, Presque Isle won both matches 3-2 and 5-0. The Wildcats went to 9-0 on the season, while the Shires slip to 4-5.
    In the first match, Presque Isle’s Alex Carter defeated Abouleish 8-0, Ben Picard of Presque Isle topped Zach Harvey 8-4 and Caleb Mathers of Presque Isle bested Derek Thomas 8-1. In doubles, the Houlton team was successful as Lowell Mathews-Elliot Mooers overtook Chris Cawley-Kyle Gilson 8-6 and the Delano brothers, Dustin and Tyler edged Connor Shaw-Mike Picard 9-8 (10-8).
    In the second match, Abouleish lost 8-1, while Harvey fell 8-4 and Thomas, 8-0 in singles. In doubles, Matthews/Mooers were defeated 8-6 and the Delanos fell, 8-3.
    Last Thursday, the Houlton boys defeated Calais, 4-1.
    In singles, Abouleish topped Calais’ Sean Cavanaugh, 8-4, while Harvey defeated Stephen Smith, 9-7 and Derek Thomas defeated Joe Martorano, 9-7. In doubles, Houlton’s only win came from the Delanos who topped Jesse Clark-Nathan Lutz, 8-2.
    The Calais girls handled Houlton, 5-0, as Bilal and Caron went down to their opponents, 8-4; and Bouvier lost, 8-5. In doubles, Fitzpatrick/Torres were defeated 8-0 and Gerath/Hannigan were topped, 8-4.
    Last Tuesday in Van Buren, the Houlton girls fell to the Crusaders, 5-0, as Bilal was defeated, 8-4, while Caron and Bouvier lost by scores of 8-1. In doubles, Fitzpatrick/Torres and Gerath/Hannigan lost 8-1, 8-5, respectively.
    The Houlton boys were edged by the Crusaders, 3-2.
    In singles, Abouleish was defeated 8-3 and Thomas 9-7, but Houlton’s Harvey topped Nathan Lapointe 8-0. In doubles: Matthews/ Mooers were bested 9-7, but the Delanos overtook Connor Lapierre-Brandon Ouellette, 8-3.
