Houlton resident Lori Hovey participated in a mission trip in April with the Military Street Baptist Church. Their destination was the Los Angeles Dream Center. The city has some 100,000 homeless people.
Hovey said, “It was evident that there was a huge need for ‘hats for the homeless’. We encountered several people out in the heat of the day who had no protection from the sun. One man in particular, his name was Jerry, had a very burned and peeling head. He kept putting his hands on top of his head as though that would prevent his head from burning.”
HOULTON’S LORI HOVEY — recently served a mission with the Military Street Baptist Church in Los Angeles, a city with 100,000 homeless people.
Upon their return to Houlton, Hovey challenged the men of the Military Street Baptist Church to donate their own hats to this worthy cause. She said that she was overwhelmed by the response and is now in the process of boxing up the hats and sending them to the Dream Center in L.A. for distribution through their ‘Hope for the Homeless’ team.
Several members of the local church are planning to adopt certain aspects of the Dream Center for the community of Houlton to help those in need.
If you have hats you would like to donate to this cause, drop them off at the church on the corner of Military and Kelleran Street.
