Southside students capture Earth Day essay honors

    Cindy Peterson, fourth grade teacher at Southside School provided an opportunity for her science students to participate in the Maine Public Service Company’s 2009 Earth Day Essay Contest. Students submitted essays entitled “What can I do to help make our earth a better place for everyone?”
    The students competed with children in the grades 3 through 5 category from throughout Aroostook County for the top three positions and a select few honorable mentions.

ALL SMILES — Three Houlton Southside students received recognition in a Maine Public Service essay competition. Receiving a third place plaque and a $50 savings bond was Kate Newman in the center with honorable mention certificates going to Taylor Reed, left and Megan McLaughlin, right. They are students of Cindy Peterson.

    Achieving third place was Kate Newman with classmates Megan McLaughlin and Taylor Reed receiving honorable mentions.
    Newman received a $50 savings bond and a plaque. Each of the girls received an Earth Day t-shirt and  a certificate of achievement.
    The girls’ essays were displayed at the Aroostook Centre Mall with other winners and Newman’s was featured in an earlier edition of the Houlton Pioneer Times.
