The Thorntons, of Woodland enjoyed a Saturday morning together as they participated in the annual Children’s Fishing Derby, hosted by the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge. Kyle Rider,11, of Mapleton, removes one of his fish caught in Delima Pond during the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge’s Children’s Fishing Derby. Kids were finding the trout were plentiful during the event with most being able to fulfill their 10-fish limit with little trouble. Of course after a hard morning’s work of fishing, lunch taste pretty good, as part of the event, Sleepers of Caribou donated hotdogs, chips and drinks to help sate the appetites of the fishermen, regardless of their age.

Paul Beaulieu, a volunteer on hand at the fishing derby hosted at the wildlife refuge last Saturday, helps Erin Jandreau get ready to hold her trout up for a photo. The annual fishing derby saw an estimated 15 kids register to try their luck in Delimo Pond. Each participant was allowed to catch up to 10 of the stocked trout. With the weather cooperating nicely and even though the blackflies were out in full force, the event gave kids a chance to experience the recreational fun of fishing in the most enticing environment of the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge.
