Heidi’s Hair and Tanning Studio, located on Main St., officially opened for business on Tuesday, May 26. A grand opening was celebrated, with a ribbon cutting ceremony, on Thursday, June 11. The new sign is up and Heidi is more than busy scheduling hair and tanning appointments.
The business will feature a variety of hair services as well as the availability of two tanning beds. The hours are as follows: Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The next scheduled August Festival meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 17, at the Washburn Civic Center starting at 6:30 p.m. Much support is needed for an event this size to be a success. Volunteers are needed and all input is welcome, and any interested residents are urged to attend.
The Perham Baptist Church will be holding their annual Vacation Bible School from Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26. The fun goes on from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day and is open to children from 5 years old through grade 8. There will be a closing program held at the church on Friday, June 26, at 7 p.m. For transportation, contact Don Thompson at 455-8218.
There will be special outdoor meetings starting June 10 and going through July 22 at the Town Park on Main St. There will be special music and lots of singing as well as a brief message from God’s Word starting each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to bring their lawn chairs or sit in your cars to enjoy or join in this special time with friends and neighbors. TOPS hold their regular meetings each Monday at the Washburn Trailrunners clubhouse, starting with weigh-in at 4:15 p.m. and the meeting to follow from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. The Washburn Soup Kitchen schedule will include regular meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays, served from 3 to 5 p.m., and there will also be special senior citizen meals served on the second Friday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The kitchen is open to any and all senior citizens in the tri-community area.
The Salmon Brook Historical Society will be holding their quarterly meeting on Thursday, June 25, at the Washburn Civic Center. The potluck supper will begin at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a business meeting. Please bring a main dish or dessert, place setting and friends and neighbors. All are welcome.
Summer is arriving and with it are the many great programs for our youth through the Washburn Rec Center. Robbie Krul will be in town with his Dutch Soccer Camp. The remaining days for this event will be Wednesday, June 17, through Friday, June 19. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Washburn Soccer Field.
The remaining days of Beaver Basketball Camp under the leadership of Larry Worcester will be held Wednesday, June 17, and Thursday, June 18, at the elementary school from 5 to 7 p.m.
On Monday, June 22, the basketball program for grades K-2 will be held from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. and grades 3-4 playing from 9:30 to 10:30 am., with grades 5-8 taking to the courts from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Also on Monday, June 22, there will be swimming lessons in Presque Isle from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a major league baseball game against Limestone starting at 5:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, June 23, there will be soccer with grades K-2 playing from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 playing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 playing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be minor league baseball practice from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Also on Tuesday, June 23, there will be cooking classes for grades 5-8 held at the Rec Center from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 2-4 will be cooking from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The summer programs will begin on Monday, June 22, and run until July 31. They include cooking on Tuesdays at the Rec Center with grades 5-8 going from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 2-4 will be cooking from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. They will be taught the fundamentals of cooking, including measuring ingredients and reading recipes.
Arts and crafts will be held at the Rec Center with grades 5-8 using the kitchen from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades K-4 going from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. There will be projects made of yarn, fabric, paint, along with other craft supplies which will be provided, and each child may create a different craft each week.
Soccer will be held each Tuesday and students will be taught basic skills through fun games and drills. On rainy days there will be no soccer. Grades K-2 play from 8:30 to 9 a.m., grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5 through 8 take to the field from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
On Tuesday and Thursday evenings there will be minor league baseball for ages 7-9, and age is determined as of May 1. Fundamental skills of baseball and softball will be taught and participants will play against teams in the surrounding communities. Practices will be on Tuesdays and games on Thursdays.
Mondays and Wednesdays will be the time for basketball, and players will enjoy a variety of fun drills and scrimmage games. Grades K-2 play from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 2 to 4 “batter up” from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with grades 5-8 playing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Jr. softball for 9- to 12-year-old girls (age determined as of May 1) will be played on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, with practices on Mondays and Wednesdays. The team will play against other communities both at home and away.
The Hershey Track and Field event for both boys and girls ages 9-14 will be held Tuesday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at the Caribou High School. Be sure and check in by 9:30 a.m. Events will include the 50-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes, along with the 800-meter run, the 4X100 relay and the standing long jump and softball throw. Participants can enter three events, either two track and one field or two field and one track event.
Major league baseball will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings for 10- to 12-year-olds, with age determined as of May 1. Pony league baseball will be held for 13- to 16-year-old boys, with age determined as of May 1. Games will be held on Monday and Wednesday afternoons in Presque Isle. Washburn and Ashland will be combining to make a team.
There will also be a free summer lunch and breakfast program running during this same time. Breakfasts will be available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and the lunches will be served from 11:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. at the elementary school cafeteria. This program is open to ages 18 and younger.

All members of the Washburn Town Council were in attendance during the Monday, June 8, meeting. Starting at 7 p.m., prior to the Council meeting, a General Assistance Public Hearing was held to vote on the Adoption of Current General Assistance Ordinances, and both were approved by the Council.
The Council meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by public participation. Three area residents inquired about tax-acquired property, land and buildings, including the process of purchasing the property.
The Council voted to accept the minutes from the May 11 Council meeting and reviewed the financial figures through May 31, 2009.
Included in the agenda items was a vote on a Maine Public Service pole permit, and the Council signed off and approved the permit.
The Council was apprised of a new contract from Crown Ambulance/TAMC. The new contract will be a five-year one, versus the current one-year contract, which the Council voted to accept.
During the meeting, discussion was opened for the plans for setting the mil rate during their July Council meeting. The current mil rate is 21.154.
In the manager’s report, issues discussed included an update on the fire department’s new truck and Chief Troy Heald was in attendance. The Council was also notified that an MMA representative will be coming in June to do an evaluation concerning departmental and municipal items. They were also notified that the Maine Bureau of Labor Standards will also be her in June. The Council also decided not to rejoin NMDC for the coming year.
SAD 45 delivered their warrant for budget and referendum voting.
The Council went into executive session to discuss economic development and personnel matters. They re-opened the Council meeting and voted to accept the nomination of Beverly Turner as the new town manager/clerk for the town of Washburn, effective Aug. 15. The current town manager, Andrea Powers, will be leaving for Seattle, Wash., in August of this year, and she takes with her the best wishes from the town.
The next scheduled Town Council meeting is set for Monday, July 13, at 7 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center .
Several ladies from the Rec Center Seniors Group recently made a trip to Easton to join the seniors there for a fun BBQ. They enjoyed chicken, potato and macaroni salads and fruit salads, along with cucumbers, homemade bread, squares and other desserts, as well as punch and coffee.
The group enjoyed the meal and visit, even enjoying a who-did-it, over who a spilled drink. The 11 ladies from Washburn making the trip included: Glenna Bragg, Drucilla Turner, Sylvia Wardwell, Bernadette Rossignol, Arline Cole, Audrey Pavlick, Gwen Bragg, Eunice Carman, Norma Baker, Anita Tarr, Glenna Ewing, along with Rec Director Marcie Barbarula.

There was a Grand Opening of Heidi’s Hair and Tanning Studio recently to welcome the new business to Washburn. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was done and attended by: Councilman Jeff Wark, Council Chairman Mike Umphrey and Councilman Kermit Fuller. Assisting with the ribbon cutting was Town Manager Andrea Powers and owner Heidi Bois. Watching the ceremony was Heidi’s mom, Tammy Cropley, and Heidi’s daughter, Hailey Bois. Putting much time and effort into the shop’s opening was Heidi’s dad, Greg Cropley Sr., who was unable to attend the grand opening.

BICYCLE SAFETY DEMONSTRATION — Melanie Stewart, owner of MOJO’s in Presque Isle, visited Washburn Elementary School May 27 and 29, speaking with 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-grade students about bicycle safety. She spoke about the new helmet law, advising students it’s the law in Maine to wear a helmet correctly if you are under 16. She also discussed the four safety areas to be a safe bicyclist: Wear your helmet the right way; dress bright, light and tight for safety; check your bike for safety; and obey the rules of the road. In addition to demonstrations, Stewart also handed out information sheets outlining Rules for Bicyclists and Be a Safe Bike Driver.
