The Houlton 13-14 year old All-star team lost its first tournament game, but came back to win three straight to advance to the final four in the District 3 Junior League championships.
The Houlton area team consists of players from Houlton Little League, as well as players from the Border League. Playing from Houlton are Jimmy Fitzpatrick, Nick Guiod, Hunter Hanning, Isaiah Straubel, Dan Swallow, Jon Tuttle, Tyler Bartlett and Dalton Cloney. Playing from the Border League are Nick Lunn, Chris Wallace and Brandon Malone.
All of the games are being played at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.
Houlton took on Hermon the first game in what was a pitchers’ duel for most of the game. Houlton led off the top of the first scoring a run. Nick Guiod singled, stole second and third and was driven in on a base hit by Hanning. That would prove to be the only run of the game for Houlton. Nick Lunn was on the mound and pitched very well holding Hermon to two runs through the fourth inning.
In the fifth, Hermon combined two hits, an error, a hit batter and a couple of walks to score five runs to break the game open. Hermon won by a final of 10-1.
Guiod led the local All-stars with two singles.
Houlton was now dropped to the losers’ bracket in the double elimination tournament. Next up was a familiar foe in the Katahdin Valley team from the Island Falls/Sherman area.
Isaiah Straubel took the mound and pitched for the 17-2 win. Straubel gave up two hits and struck out three in two innings for the win. Dalton Cloney pitched the last two innings, giving up two hits and two unearned runs.
Hunter Hanning led the offense driving a triple, double and a single, while knocking in four runs. Lunn had a double and a single, driving in three runs, while Guiod had two singles driving in three runs. Jimmy Fitzpatrick had three singles. Dan Swallow and Tyler Bartlett had two singles each. Sebasticook from the Newport area was next for Houlton. Hanning took the mound for Houlton and pitched well, striking out 11 in five innings of work. Unfortunately Houlton was down 4-2 when he left the game in the sixth.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth that the bats came alive. Hanning tripled to lead off the inning and was brought home on Jon Tuttle’s single. After a walk to Cloney, Bartlett doubled in two. After a Guiod single, Fitzpatrick doubled in two more. He scored on a Hanning single to plate the last run of the inning.
Chris Wallace came in to relieve Lunn. After a couple of hits and a run, Lunn came back in to shut the door for the save. Due to the way the pitching rules are set up Lunn was able to pick up the win and the save.
Glenburn was up next making it three trips to Bangor in three days for a tired group of kids. The bats were alive, as Houlton pounded out 19 hits en route to the 21-11 win. Swallow led the attack with a triple and three singles. Hanning had a double and two singles, Straubel had three singles, while Guiod, Tuttle and Bartlett all had two singles. Super sub Brandon Malone got his first hit, as well. Straubel picked up the win on the mound while Wallace picked up the save.
Houlton takes on Brewer today at 5 p.m. in Mansfield Stadium.
