The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, July 7, at 6:30 a.m.
Rotarian Ed Wright spoke of the Long Range Golf Drive competition scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at the Mars Hill Airport. This is a qualifier for regional and national competitions in Pennsylvania and Nevada. There will be three divisions: Open, 45 & up, and 55 & up. The current record for a long drive is 418 yards.
Assistant District Governor Ralph McPherson installed the new slate of officers: Incoming President Steve Hitchcock; Vice President Steve Milliard; Treasurer Dana Crory; Secretary Richard Watson; Sargent at Arms Ed Wright; Directors Larry Fletcher, Jim Shaw and Pam Townsend; and Past President Bruce Hussey. When asked if she had any words of advice for Bruce as he stepped down after two years as president of the club, his mother said “Yes, but he won’t listen.” Bruce was presented with a plaque in thanks for his contribution to the club.
The special speaker was District Governor Gordon Dempsey. He spoke of how Rotary is made up of many individual clubs — each making a difference to someone locally and/or internationally. He urges each club to set realistic and attainable goals for the upcoming year. As an organization, Rotary’s goals are the eradication of polio, as well as water and sanitation issues around the world.
District 7810 has set six goals for the next three years: To increase membership, to fund the Rotary Foundation, to make greater use of the Rotary International programs available to encourage youth and young adults to participate in the work of Rotary, to encourage greater involvement in Rotary International programs, to promote information campaigns to increase public awareness of Rotary and to increase capacity to provide service to clubs in the district.
Rotarians are to remember that we can make a difference — one person at a time.
