Summer baseball has begun as Katahdin Trust took on Key Bank Friday, July 3.
Denny Young earned the 4-0 win for Katahdin Trust by pitching three scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Key’s Isaac Devine was handed the loss despite striking out 13.
For Katahdin Trust at the plate, Patrick Cash had a double, Denny Young two singles, and Connor McManus, Carter Doherty and Alex Brewer all with singles. Key Bank had singles from Chase Levasseur, Devine, and Ian Franz. Key Bank also had key defensive plays turned in by Alex Tilley, Carter Trombley, Chase Levasseur, Franz, and Jared Kilcollins.
In the second game of the morning, K of C outscored Savings Bank, 18-4. Grant Bridges picked up the win for K of C as he struck out 13 batters. For K of C at the plate, Bridges had two doubles and a triple, Marcus Ouellette had a triple, Jack Beaulieu had a double, Colin Daigle three singles, Max Bartley two singles, Drew Henderson a single and Khasen Lowe reached base in all of his at bats.
Nick Bartlett took the loss for Savings Bank. The pitching of Bartlett, Brad Kinney, Jake Kinney and Adam Paterson had a total of strikeouts for Savings Bank. Savings Bank also had fine defensive plays turned in by Matt O’Connell and Brad Kinney. Bartlett doubled, while Jake Kinney and Adam Paterson both singled to provide the offense.
After the rain let off it was back to the baseball field. K of C took a 4-2 win over Key Bank July 6. Ryan Player picked up the win as Isaac Devine had the loss. Player provided the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Marcus Ouellette and Colin Daigle each provided a single for K of C.
Griffin Guerrette had Key Bank’s only hit. Chase Levasseur, Ian Franz, and Alex Tilley all had fine defensive plays for Key Bank, while Ryan Player turned in great defense for K of C.
The second game that day featured Katahdin Trust and Savings Bank in a battle of financial institutions. Katahdin Trust was victorious, 6-2, as David Kofstad notched the win and Jake Kinney took the loss. Jacob O’Berry was a defensive standout.
The pitchers for Savings Bank, Jake Kinney and Brad Kinney, had nine combined strikeouts while Kofstad and Alex Brewer had 11 strikeouts for Katahdin Trust. Matt O’Connell had two hits and Chandler Paradis a single for Savings Bank.
Griffin Guerrette gained the win as Key Bank took the win over Savings Bank, 8-0. Jake Kinney was handed the loss. Trevor Miranda provided Savings Bank with their only hit. Guerrette and Chase Levasseur both had two singles and Grant Stewart, Isaac Devine, Ian Franz, Alex Tilley and John Saucier all had hits for Key Bank. Kinney and Guerrette both logged 14 strikeouts for their respective teams.
K of C topped Katahdin Trust by a score of 7-2. Ryan Player picked up another win after pitching four scoreless innings with nine strikeouts for K of C. Player had a triple in the game and Drew Henderson, Gavin Kelley and Colin Daigle all added hits for the winners.
Kofstad took the pitching loss. Alex Brewer had Katahdin Trust’s two hits. Jacob O’Berry made a key defensive play in the fourth inning to keep KT within striking distance.
Kiwanis started its season on the right foot by picking up the 8-3 win over the Elks. Sam Gray and Oliver Gerrish combined to limit the Elks to two hits, which were off the bats of Cooper Madore and Colin McKay.
Gerrish and Ben Buckley each had base knocks for Kiwanis, who also got some fine defensive plays from Buckley, Gerrish, Gray, and Andrew Paterson.
Madore, McKay, Travis Sylvain, Keeghan Lowe and Byron Winslow all came up big defensively for the Elks.
This week brought mostly rain and few games. Last Wednesday, however, the Wildcats had a doubleheader and won both ends. In the first game, the Wildcats defeated the Panthers of Mars Hill. Ryley Norton earned the win. In the second contest of the day against Ashland-Washburn, the Cats ended a close game with Griffen Lovely taking the late-inning victory.
The last day of baseball before the July 4 holiday had both Presque Isle teams battling it out, with Evan Waddell earning the pitching win over the Cats by a score of 8-5. In the second game, the Wildcats pulled out a win to even the day’ matchup with Griffen Lovely posting the game-winning hit.
The Wildcats’ record is now 5-1, while RBD’s record is 3-1.
The Presque Isle Recreation Department’s Swim Team captured first place at the Fort Kent swim meet held July 8. High point winners from Presque Isle were Katie Goulet, Carter Rice, Dylan Lovely, Issac Estey and Erica Hemphill.
For 8 and under girls, Katie Goulet was first and Libbee Currie third in the freestyle. Goulet won the backstroke, Molly Kingsbury was second and Currie third. Currie and Belle Thibault were second and third, respectively, in the breaststroke and Goulet first, Kingsbury second and Sophie Lambert third in the butterfly. Goulet was also second in individual medley.
In the 8 and under boys division, Carter Rice was first and Mark Graves second in freestyle. Rice also won the backstroke, with Graves taking second and and Torrey Levesque third. Levesque won the breaststroke and Graves took second, while Rice won the individual medley.
Elise Guerrette won the breaststroke and was fifth in the freestyle and the backstroke to lead Presque Isle’s 9-10 girls. Guerrette was third and Kimberly Cook fourth in the individual medley.
For 9 and 10 boys, Bradley Kinney was third and Leigh Buck fourth in the freestyle. Buck was second and Kinney third in the backstroke. In the breaststroke, Kinney was second and Buck fourth, while in the butterfly, Kinney took second and Tyler Levesque was fourth. Buck placed first in individual medley.
In the girls’ 11-12 freestyle, Mary Mitchell was first, followed by Abbie Estey in second and Kaliegh Kinney in fourth. Kinney won the backstroke and Mitchell was third, while in the breaststroke, Kinney was second and Krystal Kingsbury fourth. Estey, Kinney, Mitchell and Morgan Wilcox took the second through fifth spots, respectively, in the butterfly. Estey placed third, Mitchell fourth and Kingsbury fifth in individual medley.
Dylan Lovely was first in the 11-12 boys freestyle, followed by Brandon Goulet in second and Parker Lambert in third. Ennis won the backstroke, with Lovely second and Goulet third. In the breaststroke, Lovely was first, Lambert second and Goulet fourth. Goulet won the butterfly, with Lambert second, Ennis third and Lovely fourth. Parker gained the victory in individual medley.
In 13 and 14 girls, Emma Michalowski was fourth to lead Presque Isle. Lambert won the breaststroke and Michalowski was third. Michalowski was third and Sara Gilson fourth in the butterfly, while Michalowski was the runner-up in the individual medley.
Issac Estey was first in the freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley for 13-14 boys. Alex Hemphill was fourth in freestyle, third in the backstroke, fourth in the breaststroke and second in the butterfly. Trevor Levesque’s top placement was fifth in the butterfly.
Erica Hemphill placed first in freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley in the 15-18 girls division. Divya Bisht placed third in freestyle and butterfly, first in backstroke and second in breaststroke.
Kyle Gilson placed first in freestyle and butterfly and second in backstroke and individual medley in the 15-18 boys category. Steve Goulet placed second in breaststroke and butterfly, third in freestyle and individual medley.
The next meet is today at Fort Fairfield.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has begun registration for its youth soccer program at the William V. Haskell Community Center.
The program is offered to boys and girls entering grades 1-6 this fall. The registration fee is $18.
Schedules and rosters will be handed out at the community center Tuesday, Aug. 11, with play beginning Aug. 24 for grades 1-2 and the week of Aug. 18 for grades 3-6.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will hold a meeting for those interested in playing in a flag football league this fall on July 22 at 7 p.m. at the community center. Those looking to submit a team and/or join a team in the league should attend. Please call 764-2545 with questions.
