Sporting events plentiful at festival

    Several sporting events are planned for the upcoming Maine Potato Blossom  Festival in Fort Fairfield. 

    The Maine Potato Blossom Festival Girls Softball Tournament was held yesterday (and today if necessary) at the Fort Fairfield Athletic Complex. The tourney is for girls ages 9-12.
    The annual Potato Blossom Festival swim meet is set for today at 9 a.m. at the Fort Fairfield Municipal Swimming Pool. The rain date is Thursday, July 16.
    The annual Potato Blossom Festival 3-on-3 basketball tournament began yesterday and was to continue into tonight if necessary. The tourney site is the Fort Fairfield Community Center.
    The Potato Blossom 5-Miler Road Race will take place Saturday, July 18. Walkers start at 8:30 a.m., and runners at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. across from Hillside IGA on Main Street in Fort Fairfield.
    The registration fee is $15 per person, which includes a T-shirt for the first 50 to register. Hillside IGA is the race sponsor. For more information, contact Paul Lamoreau at 764-6517.
    The festival’s annual golf scramble will also be held Saturday, July 18. It is a three-person scramble format held at Aroostook Valley Country Club. To register, call the country club at 476-8083.
    The Regatta on the Aroostook, for canoes and kayaks, will be held Saturday, July 18, with a mass start planned at 5 p.m. Registration is from 3-4:45 p.m. at Forbes Gravel Pit, six miles north of Fort Fairfield on Rt. 161 which also serves as the start of the race. The finish will be at the public boat landing just below the bridge in Fort Fairfield. 
    The course consists of approximately 6.5 miles of flat water. The cost is $10 per person and includes a T-shirt for first 50 to register.

    The Spud Cycle Classic Bicycle Race is scheduled for Sunday, July 19. The 25-mile race starts at 10 a.m., with youth races begin at 11:30 a.m.
    Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Fort Fairfield Community Center. The 25-mile and 12.5-mile races start at the Blockhouse on Main Street and end at Hillcrest Estates. Youth events begin and end near the Community Center.
