LIMESTONE — The Limestone Community School (LCS) held a Family Barbecue for summer school students and their parents on July 29, aimed at showcasing what summer school at LCS is all about and educating families of various activities, such as the after-school program, which is an extended day throughout the year.    With a two hour duration a day, students in the after-school program can participate in a range of activities, from swimming to homework help, and venture off with the staff on cultural field trips visiting the local Band of Micmacs, the Acadian Village, and other interesting destinations.
“These are all summer school kids and their parents [attending the Barbecue today], so it’s to show them we also offer help throughout the school year as well [as summer school curriculum],” explained Kara Hamilton, a special education teacher for grades kindergarten through 8.
While some students may be weary of attending summer school, summer school does not mean sitting at a desk all day.
“Summer school is to reinforce a lot of the stuff that [a student] has learned throughout the year,” Hamilton said, “If we find a student is struggling, we’ll take what we think the student would lose by being out of school for a couple months and focus on that area so they don’t lost all the information they were taught; it’s kind of a building block for what they might learn next year.”
During the Family Barbecue Day, parents of about 40 students were able to go through the classrooms and spectate for 10 or 15 minutes to see what the students were working on and observe their child’s learning environment.
