Rec Center notes

One of many summer programs offered through the Washburn Recreation Department included a cooking class for grades 4 through 8, which met weekly under the direction of Charlotte Wilson. The last class of the summer was a very special one, which included some Washburn-area senior citizens.

The students all got together, along with some ladies who agreed to be the kitchen crew, and served dinner to the seniors. The menu consisted of the recipes they had learned to cook during the summer, and included appetizers Berry Smoothies and deviled eggs. The main course was made up of a delicious fresh veggie pizza and bacon tomato cups. The dessert finished the meal off with some yummy seven-layer bars, along with coffee and tea.
The children had fun cooking and serving, and the seniors were all given a special booklet with all the recipes in it to take home to enjoy again.
Seniors included: Peggy Sperrey, Fran Dickinson, Anita Tarr, Marion Turner, Barb Churchill, Glenna Bragg, Glenna Ewing, Evelyn Woodman, Linda Forsman, Drucilla Turner, Arlene Cole, Bernadette Rossignol, Eunice Carman, Wilda Goodall, Barbara McLaughlin, Gwen Bragg, Lorraine Harrison, Margaret Barker, Falicia Rossignol, Audrey Pavlick and Sylvia Wardwell.
Student “chefs” included: Victoria Savoy, Virginia Farley, Ashley Conroy, Edwin McLaughlin, Natasha Lizotte, Tabitha McLaughlin, Rachel Driscoll, Zoe Bigbee, Jayden Harris, Noah McLaughlin, Molly Clark, Sydney Chavez, Samantha Churchill and Turner McLaughlin.
Some of the older participants were at the Rec Center in the morning and helped prepare the meal but missed it due to their commitments in the soccer program. They included: Darby Koch, Brooke Lobue, Tyler Jardine and Mykala Churchill. The kitchen crew included Diana Bragg, Lottie Doody and Stina Snyder.
The Rec Center will have a special County Fun Day on Thursday, Aug. 6, when they will take a trip to Birch Point at St. Agatha. There are still eight seats open on the van for anyone wishing to join in the fun, just phone Marcie at the Rec Center at 455-4959.

Library bookmarks

Washburn Memorial Library held their Story Time activity recently and the theme was “Now You See It.” The event was started with the group’s normal “yell,” then Janet Peary read “The Quilt Story,” and Chelsea Sadler read the book “Lulu and the Flying Babies.”
The children then painted special paintbrushes to be used in the fun activity “The Five Paint Brushes.” And library visitor Ambey Burgess read the book “Action Jackson.”
Refreshments were served and the door prizes were handed out, with winners including: Braedon Campbell, Dawson McCoy, Macayla Dickinson, Virginia Farley, Tal McCoy, Piper Campbell, Valerie Flood, Victoria Savoy, Christa McCoy, Simon Beckwith, Mariah Campbell, Scott Flood and Rebecca Savoy.
On Thursday Aug. 13, the library will begin a knitting circle under the leadership of skilled knitter Carolyn Hayden. She will also be available to give classes to those who need or want them and everyone, no matter how skilled, is welcome to attend this new library program.
Washburn Memorial Library was lucky enough to receive a Libra Foundation grant. This grant was for children’s books and the Washburn Library received a total of 82 books worth approximately $1,400. This was a matching grant, and the library used the $350 that it was responsible for from the Randall Endowment. There will be a special open house for all to preview these books on Friday, Aug. 7, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. All are encouraged to attend and see the fine array of books.

Scout Troop 177

Despite the rain, members of Boy Scout Troop 177 attended the July 18 Barbara Goodyear Environmental Day held at the Perham Town Office. The Troop was requested to raise the American flag as well as lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the day.
The Scouts and leaders got a chance to enjoy some of the various events during the day and received numerous thanks from Perham town officials as well as others attending the event for their professionalism during the flag ceremony. They were asked to return again next year with hopes for better weather.

ATVs on the trail

More than 75 ATV riders took to the trail on a misty day, Saturday, July 25, for the Ultimate ATV Event, hosted by the Star City ATV Club of Presque Isle, which took them right through Washburn. Some stopped for gas at White’s Service, while a few grabbed a quick soda at the Food Mart.
They were headed to meet with fellow riders at the Van Buren ATV Club who hosted the noontime barbecue, then returned to “home base” in Presque Isle for a pig roast and bean-hole bean supper, closing the day off with a warming bonfire.
Among the many riders, some were clad in brightly-colored raincoats and ponchos while other hardy souls rode hatless in the rain. They all seemed to be having a great time, and rode their new and vintage machines, even including a few “mules.” They were in high spirits despite the rain, one asking if the photographer waiting at the truck route intersection in town needed a “dry towel” and another giving a strong wave and almost a victory-type signal.  For more information on the Ultimate ATV Event, check out the club’s Web site at: StarCityATV.com.

New & old festival events

Only eight days remain before the big event and the brochures are now available in area businesses and offices. Also included on the brochure is information concerning restrooms, food vendors, sponsors and a great map assisting in finding events.
The theme for the 20th annual event is: “There’s No Place Like Home,” and the Festival King and Queen are Rodney and Sylvia Wardwell, with David Lyon being the Grand Marshall.
This community certainly owes much thanks to the Festival Committee for all the hard work and planning to make such the event comes together. Much teamwork was needed to pull it off and a special thank-you goes out to the many sponsors, both big and small, every bit was needed and helped in the various events.
A special new addition to the musical times during the Festival is a band out of Ashland called Les Sismore which is pronounced “Less is More.” The group plays ‘90s rock hits and members of the band include lead vocalist and guitarist Ryan Carney Jr., bass guitarist and vocalist Eric Bisson, and Ian Robertson, vocalist and on drums. This group will be set up next to the Food Mart and starting time is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14.
There will be a Medieval Troop from the SCA next to the Salmon Brook Historical Society Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  on Saturday, Aug. 15. This should be an interesting addition to the weekend event schedule.
There will be plenty of reminiscing at the annual Alumni Banquet which will be held at the high school on Friday, Aug. 14, with the social hour starting at 5 p.m. and dinner starting at 6 p.m. Guests need to bring a salad, casserole or dessert and place settings. Beans and rolls, along with coffee, tea and sodas, will be provided. For further information on the banquet, please contact Linda Seward at 455-8373. Anyone having information on members of the WHS Class of 1960 is asked to bring it, as next year will be their big 50th reunion. E-mail and mailing addresses or phone numbers would be a great help in making sure all classmates are informed of the reunion plans. You can also contact either Nancy Todd at rltodd66@myfairpoint.net or Helen Hause at hhause@maine.rr.com with any information you may have.
A special yard sale will be held by the Washburn Class of 2010 at the Swimm residence at 1236 Main St. on Friday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 15. This is a fund-raiser for the class in order to cover some of their costs for Project Graduation and their senior activities during graduation time. For further information, contact Advisor Tracy Reed at 455-4886
There will be a book-signing at the Washburn Memorial Library from 1 to 3 p.m. Former Washburn native Bonnie Boyce, writing under the pen name of Bonnie Lee, will be signing copies of her works including her latest one, “Pretty Ribbons,” a collection of poetry. She will also be giving a special reading, and proceeds from the event will go towards breast cancer awareness.
The Washburn Rotary will be sponsoring the Family Movie Night at the side of the Salmon Brook Historical Society barn. Bring a lawn chair and take advantage of the view from the soccer field. The feature showing “Wall-E” will begin at 8:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served by the Rotary Club. The rain location will be at the high school gym.
One big special time is the early-morning breakfast at the Washburn Trailrunners clubhouse. The menu includes scrambled eggs, home fries, French toast, bacon or ham and coffee or juice. The event goes from 6 to 9:30 a.m. and proceeds go to benefit the many expenses and activities of the snowmobile club.
The parade registration at the high school parking lot begins at 6:30 a.m., or you can contact Mike Umphrey at 455-4836 or e-mail lynumphrey@yahoo.com. The parade starts at 9 a.m.
The antique tractor pull registrations will be held at the Penobscot McCrum location on the Parsons Road from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and the pulls begin at 11 a.m. The various classes include 2,000 to 7,000 pounds, then a second round of tractors weighing 2,500 to 7,500 pounds, with a final third round of “Open Class.” There will be a youth class between the even and odd classes. All youth have to have passed a youth safety course before they can pull, and the course is only given by appointment at least two weeks prior to a pull. For further information, contact the Keith Boulier at 768-6911.
There will be mini tractor rides provided by Sterling and Robin Haynes held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the elementary school parking lot.

The Boy Scouts from Troop 177 will be hosting a horseshoe tourney at the Thomas Brewer Memorial Park by the Aroostook River starting at 1 p.m.
Don’t forget to line up to get your barbecued chicken dinner sponsored by the Washburn Fire Department. The big lunch is served at the firehouse from 11:30 a.m. until the chicken is gone.
The Washburn Rotary will also be sponsoring a baked bean supper held at the Civic Center from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Proceeds will go towards the many civic contributions taken care of by the local Rotary Club.
On Sunday, Aug. 16, the Perham Ladies will be holding their annual brunch at the Civic Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be a tri-community-wide gospel concert held at the high school gym on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. This is always a crowd pleaser, and local talent brings in a nearly full house for the event. To sign up as a participant, or if you need further information, contact Matt Palmer at 455-4341.

JOINING IN THE “ULTIMATE ATV Event,” hosted by the Star City ATV Club of Presque last weekend, were about 75 riders from all over the Aroostook County, the state and other states too. The group are pictured heading to their noontime barbecue in Van Buren, as they passed through Washburn. All seemed to be in high spirits even though the day was misty and rainy.
