Castle Hill church to celebrate centennial this weekend

The Castle Hill Advent Christian Church will be marking its 100th year serving the Lord this weekend! There will be a picnic Saturday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. at the church, rain or shine. A special cake will be served followed by a service at 6 p.m. The Rev. Dave Ross has been invited to be the guest speaker. Many will remember Rev. Ross when he served as pastor at the State Road Advent Christian for many years.

On Sunday, a morning service will be held at 9:30 a.m. and an evening service is scheduled for 6 p.m. During the weekend, special music will be provided by Sherry Calhoun and Galen Doody. Pastor Lucy Lovley and the entire church congregation invite the public to attend this very momentous occasion! If you have any special memories of the Castle Hill Advent Christian Church, pictures or history about the church, please contact Natalie Maynard at 764-4878.

New officers will be elected for the new year. Please come lend a hand, share your ideas, or volunteer to help with the upcoming fund-raiser!
Little Known Holidays
It was a bit difficult finding a “little known holiday” worth including in this week’s column. The Web site I use as a reference had odd holidays listed like “More Herbs Less Salt Day,” “Race Your Mouse Day,” and “Frankenstein Day.” Not exactly holidays I thought were worthy of profiling! One, however, did seem appropriate to mention. Aug. 27 has been named “Just Because Day.” If you have ever had an impulse to do something “just because,” (within reason, of course) take advantage of this holiday on Thursday! Take an unplanned vacation day, visit someone you haven’t seen in a while, or pay for the coffee for the person in the drive thru line behind you. Be creative! Now we all have a reason to do something “just because!”
McHatten Family Reunion
Descendents of Robert A. McHatten and Mary Hamilton and James Porter and Matilda McHatten will gather together Saturday, Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Castle Hill Grange Hall to celebrate their family reunion. A potluck meal is scheduled for noon. Please bring a picnic style lunch and a dish to share.
The family is asking those planning to attend to bring any old documents, correspondence, or photographs you may have. There may be equipment available to copy shared photographs and documents, so those providing original copies may keep them, if so desired. Family members are also asked to come prepared to discuss any research that may have been completed recently, regardless of how small the information received. Most of our records obtained have been small projects that do add up and look impressive when compiled. If you are a descendent/cousin/family friend, you are invited to attend this celebration. Please e-mail Roxanne McHatten Gura at rmchatten@sbcglobal.net with any questions or comments.
Adult Activities
Just a reminder that the Mapleton Lion’s Hall will be open every day Monday through Friday from 9-11 a.m. for any adults to walk laps upstairs. Adults and seniors citizens are also encouraged to come enjoy knitting, crocheting, puzzles and crafts.
Final Sale
The Haystack Historical Society will be hosting a garage sale in the east wing of the museum for the last time this Saturday, Aug. 29. The museum is open for the final day of the season Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

THE WEST CHAPMAN ADVENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH recently held its Vacation Bible School surrounded by a space theme. Community children enjoyed Bible stories, songs with motions, outdoor games and “cosmic” crafts and snacks. The final evening parents were invited to watch the children (and costumed helpers) sing and dance to the songs they learned. Each child went home with a bag of craft projects from the week, a certificate of completion and an invitation to attend Sunday School at the church Sunday mornings.
